Stupid Purchases That Have Actually Helped Me Transition into Adulthood

Everyone says that becoming an adult is either the best or worst thing to ever happen. Whether it is from the emotional growth stunt that COVID-19 has caused or the lack of interaction I have had over the past few years, I have found this ever-so-weird transition from girlhood to adulthood to be surprisingly awkward.

I feel like no one is telling me I cannot still use the same shampoo and conditioner from Grade 8. No one is suggesting that I watch something other than eight hours of Dance Moms compilations when I need something to binge. Instead, I feel like I have had to figure out what things are actually worth my hard-earned dollars and what is a waste of money. Luckily, I think the eldest child in me has landed on five items that have officially helped me transition into adulthood:

1. Weighted Blanket

Yes, I am another one of those adults on the weighted blanket bandwagon. As someone who has struggled with sleep their entire life, I had tried everything for a sleep remedy before making the (somewhat overpriced) purchase of a weighted blanket. I tried melatonin, CBD, yoga meant for sleep, and meditation. I have tried everything and anything to help relieve my anxiety around sleeping. However, after years of being frugal at the idea of paying money for a weighted blanket, I finally did, and I purchased twenty pounds of sleeping relief. My weighted blanket has changed my life so significantly for the better. Even if I get fewer hours of sleep than I need, I still feel rested with the power of that blanket.

2. Ice Face Roller

No, I am not trying to jump on the “That Girl” trend and get you on board with a million skincare products that do not really do anything. However, I am telling you that the ice roller is a supreme purchase. Whether you are trying to get a jump start to your day, want to skip the cold shower, or are trying to de-puff your face from an evening of being out all night, an ice roller has been an essential part of my morning routine that has added a little bit more pep in my step lately.

Ice rollers are affordable finds on Amazon!

3. extra Long and quick charger

I feel like this needs very little explanation. As someone who will willingly go through her day with a phone battery at 15%, I have loved having a 10-foot super-fast charger because it allows me to feel a little more secure and less self-conscious when people point out that my phone is nearly dead, and it is only 11:14 am.

4. A Good Pair of Jeans

Now, I am not trying to tell you to go and buy a pair of jeans that will put you into credit card debt for a significant period of time. I am telling you not to buy the most popular pair of jeans or to pick up a pair of jeans from the thrift store that requires two different belts to tighten them.

I am just suggesting that you get out there, check out the thrift store, GAP, Zara, or American Eagle (my personal recommendation) and find a pair of jeans that allow you to move, allow you to style it up, or even dress it down. I am telling you that you need a pair that you do not feel the need to jump out of when you get home. Seriously, it is so essential to adulthood, probably more than learning how to do your taxes.

5. Emotional Support Water Bottle

Finally, everyone needs their own emotional support water bottle that gets them through the weekday and, once again, through the mornings after a long night out. I am someone who is always looking to save a buck. However, I give you permission to splurge on a YETI or Lululemon water bottle if you desire. Personally, the trusted Nalgene bottle has never failed me.
