6 Things I Learned in First Year

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Queen's U chapter.

Being the eldest sibling, I never had a big brother or sister to help me navigate new experiences like going away to university. I came into first year not knowing what to expect. As the school year quickly comes to a close, I’ve reflected on my experience (the good and the bad) to compile this list of key lessons I would want to tell myself if my first year journey was just beginning.

1. Take care of yourself

If I had to choose one major takeaway, this would be it. After catching the flu twice in one semester, I truly see the value in making time for your health. Balance is everything – take care of yourself not only physically, but also mentally, emotionally and spiritually. Being healthy will enable you to enjoy first year to its fullest!

2. Explore!

Explore different interests, hobbies, music, restaurants, cultures, and the list goes on. University is an amazing place to learn more about yourself by being exposed to unfamiliar situations. Take advantage of your time in first year to start exploring what you are passionate about.

3. Take advice from anyone who is willing to give it

Of course you should take every piece of advice with a grain of salt, but take it nonetheless! They say everyone loves talking about themselves. Upper years (and also fellow classmates) are more than willing to share their stories. I picked up so many helpful tricks and tips simply from having conversations with people.

4. Ask for help if you need it

Go to your prof’s office hours, or the TA working sessions and tutorials! Don’t wait until you’re five weeks behind (like I did) to learn the material. Your classmates are great resources, so lean on them for clarification too!

5. Call your family

They love you and miss you! I’ll admit I’m the worst at keeping in touch, but I always feel so much better after talking to them. I physically write “call home” into my schedule, or set a simple reminder just so that I don’t forget to do so.

6. Relax

Enjoy the process of figuring everything out rather than worrying about not having it all put together. I found that I had to constantly remind myself this, especially in the more stressful periods. Regardless of the number of articles you read and people you talk to, you’ll never be 100% prepared for everything that’s to come. Everyone has a unique first year experience, which is what makes it so memorable!

I’ve definitely learned many more lessons this past year, but I think these are the most helpful ones. Get excited, you’ll have an amazing year!
