I’ve Started Using Affirmations, and You Should Too

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Pace chapter.

As someone who’s dealt with self-confidence issues for years, pointing out my flaws is much easier than noticing my favorable qualities. I, therefore, made it a goal of mine to start being kinder to myself, and affirmations have played a significant role in my journey. While I was reluctant to try them, I have noticed a significant difference in my mindset after only a few months, and I encourage you to incorporate this healthy habit into your daily routine.

Now you might be wondering “What exactly are affirmations, and what are they used for?”

It really is quite simple. Affirmations are words, phrases, or ideas that are used to inspire change. They are a form of self-care/self-love that can completely alter your mindset, allowing you to create challenges and achieve goals. They can be written down or spoken out loud/in your head, as long as you use the present tense to materialize them. You can recite affirmations right when you wake up to set good intentions, throughout the day to create a positive and reassuring headspace, or at night to calm your mind. Regardless of when you recite your affirmations, it’s key to focus on the meaning behind your words rather than mindlessly reciting or writing them down to truly solidify your ideas.

Affirmations are such an effortless way to make yourself feel good. The words and ideas come naturally, and you have the freedom to communicate them without much structure or seriousness. The action of putting out positive statements into the universe, regardless of whether anything technically happens, almost “tricks” your brain into believing your words. You might not initially believe what you’re saying. But, with time, you begin to accept your words as truth.

I wish that I had started incorporating affirmations into my routine sooner, but what’s most important is that I’ve started! Truly loving and accepting yourself takes time but being able to notice growth so quickly is both reassuring and inspiring. Remember that your mind is the only thing standing in the way of progress, and as capable as it is of igniting change on its own, it sometimes needs an extra push!

Here are some of my favorite positive affirmations, courtesy of @reese.regan on TikTok;

“I am abundant in light, love, and happiness.”

“I am a money magnet.”

“Opportunities and invitations are always flowing to me.”

“I show up as the best version of myself every day.”

“I succeed in everything I do in life.”

“The universe is always supporting me.”

“I am perfect, divinely protected, and guided.”
