If you’ve read Kandi Steiner’s books, you know that she loves to put her readers on a roller coaster full of heavy emotions. One minute you’re cheering for the main character, and the next you’re frustrated with their mixed signals. On Sept. 25, 2016, Steiner published her seventh book, A Love Letter to Whiskey. Then, in 2021, she wrote the novella, Love, Whiskey.

For months, I’ve been stuck in a reading slump. I have many books in my bookcase and have tried to find the perfect book to get me out of the slump. When I first picked up A Love Letter to Whiskey and read the summary, I thought it would be a calm friends-to-lovers slow burn. After finishing it, it was nothing like I expected.

The book starts from Brecks ‘B’ Kennedy’s point of view as she deals with a secret her parents have kept from her for years. She runs into a man named Jamie Shaw while jogging with her best friend Jenna. This encounter leads to a whirlwind of love, pain, drama, frustration, addiction, and sadness.

In honor of the fifth anniversary of the book’s publication, Steiner decided to write Love, Whiskey to give her readers more of the story. There are extended epilogues, letters she’s written over the years, and behind-the-scenes fun facts.

Love, Whiskey is the companion novella of the book through Shaw’s point of view. It rewinds to the beginning of his and Kennedy’s story, and you get to learn more about his thoughts and feelings about events that led up to the ending.

If you’re someone who enjoys reading slow burns and friends-to-lovers books, you will savor this. I can say it was a difficult read for me. At times, I wanted to close the book and stop reading, but I couldn’t because I had to see what happened next. I guess you could say I became addicted to whiskey!

Hey! My name is Kamora Pierce, I am a sophomore majoring in Journalism at The Ohio State University. I’ve always enjoyed writing and sharing my experiences and thoughts with others. In my free time you can always find me at a sporting event cheering loud and proud for my teams. I enjoy reading any kind of books as long as they keep me entertained, listening to music preferably hip-hop/rap, R&B and pop, and watching movies and tv shows.
