It’s simple. Detoxing, or the idea that you can use a product which will flush your system of impurities, is a scam. The companies that promote the tablets, teabags and all the various ‘detox’ products are misleading in their marketing. We must not be fooled into thinking that they cleanse your body in a healthy way, as they can actually be harmful to us.

Let’s think about what ‘detox’ means.

The word has become a modern-day fad. We hear it everywhere; in health food shops, casual conversations after a big weekend, and, of course, on social media platforms. With this constant clamour, it can be difficult to recognise that detox diets are usually not based on scientific research, are ineffective and simply a marketing ploy. If you open up your Insta feed right now, it won’t take long to come across a ‘reset’ plan, a ‘detox tea’ or a juice cleanse. All of these are really just pseudo-medical concepts designed to make you part with your money.

Why you don’t need to use ‘detox’ products.

Medically speaking, a toxin is a biological substance that interrupts normal functioning and causes harm. You, as a human, do not need to seek products that cleanse your insides because even as you’re reading this, your amazing body is breaking down any harmful substances that might have entered your system. Each day our bodies are exposed to a variety of substances—some synthetic and some natural. Our miraculous body systems are, from birth, prepared to deal with these and have been for centuries.

If we actually accumulated toxins inside us that our bodies did not deal with, we would feel incredibly ill. But thankfully, our kidneys, livers, skin, lymphatic system and lungs are involved in a load of chemical reactions which keep us healthy, without the need for anything external. It’s a multi-organ operation, that keeps going regardless of any overpriced elixir you might be sipping.

Because of the intricacies and complexities involved, there has not been a product discovered that actually assists the body with this natural detox process. No, not even that miraculous tea endorsed by your favourite celebrity, nor that 28-day reset plan! Your body will naturally be working relentlessly to perform ‘detoxification’ of any necessary harmful substances on its own. Any product which promises to detox you, or in other words replicate the complex, multistep process of your vital organs, isn’t worth your time.

Natural, effective ways to ‘Detox’.

Ironically, some detox diets which involve cutting out certain foods will ultimately start to build up chemicals called ketones. Instead of wasting your money on products which potentially cause the build-up of the exact harmful substances that they promise to expel, here’s a few things that your body appreciates:

∙     Appreciate your body. It is relentlessly working and carrying out incredible processes without instruction. Care for your body, because it is caring for you.

∙     Try a form of movement that brings you joy, whether its yoga or going for a run. Regular exercise is one of the best things for your digestive systems.

∙     Eat fresh vegetables and fruits, obviously. The vitamins within them aid with all body processes.

∙     Allow adequate sleep. Your body needs adequate rest to function.

∙     Continue to fuel yourself without ‘cutting’ anything out. Eating balanced and nutritious foods will help you keep illness free.

∙     Eat enough protein. The liver’s detoxification process is partly dependent on amino acids, which are what proteins are composed of.

∙     Drink water!

Detoxing does not require these misleading products. Unless you have been bitten by poisonous snakes or have a tendency to eat lead, you do not need to detox in any other ways but naturally! Love your body, appreciate all it does for you, and reward it with good fuel, rest and exercise.
