How to Create a Productive Work Environment That Works For You

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Nottingham chapter.

If you’re anything like me and have had a sudden realisation of how quickly the Autumn term is going (we’re six weeks in, can you believe it?) meaning that January exams are slowly but surely creeping up, it’s time to get it together. Personally, I feel that creating a work environment that you feel comfortable in is super important and will improve your level of productivity. Here are a few tips for putting together a workspace that works for you so you can be the Queen of productivity…

1. Remove any distractions

Pop your phone in a drawer away from your desk or in a different room if necessary. I also like putting my laptop on ‘do not disturb’ mode so I’m not distracted by emails from ASOS and their ‘new in’ section. Say goodbye to procrastination and get it done!

2. Pimp your space

Get creative and make it more ‘you’. It will make you want to spend more time there and, in turn, this will help you get things done rather than crawling back into bed. So treat yourself to some fairy lights or a new candle and put up some photos of your family, your pals and your motivation.

3. Stay organised

Personally, I create a ‘to-do’ tray on my desk which holds everything that I need to get done that week, whether it be in the form of a to-do list, printed applications for graduate schemes (the bane of my life at the moment), whatever it may be! This way you can see exactly what needs to be done and can stay on top of things.

4. Let some light in

Open your blinds, or if you prefer to keep them shut (if you live on the ground floor, you’re forgiven) then pop on a light and a couple of candles to set the mood. I invested in a Himalayan rock salt lamp recently and have been loving it. A bright room has been proven to increase productivity, your overall mood and general well-being.

5. Find your productive music genre

Listening to music can often increase productivity and creativeness when working. Several studies have shown that classical music in particular boosts productivity levels. So, have a little browse of Spotify and find your own work jam!

Give these 5 productivity-boosters a go, you’ll get more work done and feel amazing for it.
