5 Ways to Build and Maintain Self-Confidence

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at NCAT chapter.

“Because you’re THAT GIRL”

Let’s be honest being confident is hard. Confidence is a skill a skill and it takes practice. Yes that’s right you have to practice being confident and being comfortable in your own skin. It’s so easy to become discouraged or insecure dealing with the pressures of society and campus, so here are 5 simple tips to build that confidence and keep that head high! (Don’t want that crown to fall girl.)

  1. Daily Affirmations

Daily affirmations are positive statements that aid in manifestation and the elimination of negative and self destructive thoughts. Our thoughts become actions and words become truth.

Try repeating these affirmations 3 times a day, to keep a motivated and optimistic mind.

“I am beautiful…”

“I am worth it.. “

“I can….and I will..”

Your affirmations should be constructed based on what YOU need to hear. Make sure they are believable and self-serving. You can put your affirmations anywhere. Write them on a notebook, stick them on your mirror, make a screensaver or even a lock screen. Speak positivity into yourself and everything you do on a daily basis.

2. Pep Talks

Look at yourself in the mirror…yep that’s all you (“oh she’s cute”), look her in the face and let her know it’s about to be on and poppin! Taking time to have conversations or pep talks with yourself does wonders for your confidence. It’s so easy to get caught up in what others might think of us, but what you think of yourself holds way more power. Claim your victory in advance!

  • If you don’t gas yourself up, who will!?

  • Be realistic, honesty is key

  • Never say never, always TRY(what’s the worse that can happen?)

3. Posture

Body language. Shrinking yourself is not going to make you disappear, lift your head and walk with purpose. I used to walk with my head down for so long, it got to the point I didn’t even realize I was doing it. It can be scary or uncomfortable at first but it takes practice and courage to overcome it. You don’t have to walk like you’re on a Paris runway on your way to class, but small changes make a big difference. Start small and before you know you’ll be stunting effortlessly.

  • Good for your alignment

  • Helps prevent premature aging

4. Self Care

When do you feel your most confident? What makes you feel beautiful? What do you want to look it? SELF CARE IS MANDATORY. Take time to paint your nails, try something new with your hair, buy a new outfit,  Investing more time and energy in your maintenance does wonders for your confidence and self-worth. Do as little or as much maintenance that works for you. You deserve to look and feel beautiful 24/7.

  • Do a face mask or book a facial

  • Stay active and make healthy food choices

  • Take pride in your appearance

5. Who is “They”(Dismiss negative comments)

Why do we give people so power for us? Why do “they” have such a big influence on what we do and how we feel. Take that power back! Your opinion about yourself is the only one that matters, stop allowing people to discourage you and tell you how to be you, WHO ARE THEY?! It all starts with you so, be honest with yourself and being your own critic. If you feel like you’re all that and a bag of chips, who are “they” to tell you, that you’re not? (Because you are!)

  • You are the star in your show

  • Nobody can check you, if you check yourself first

  • “They” won’t say it to your face

Your biggest competition is yourself. Always strive to be a better version of yourself that you build and develop everyday. Confidence is not about being better than others, it’s about being better to ourselves.

“Because when we let our light shine, we unconsciously give others permission to do the same”

Hi! I'm Vicky, I'm 21 and I'm a third year Evolutionary Biology student at the University of Exeter's Penryn campus. When I'm not learning about the weird ways animals reproduce you'll probably find me wrapped in a blanket with a book and a whole packet of custard creams.
Hi everyone! I am a sophomore at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University who should be majoring in Weddings, but is actually a Journalism & Mass Communications student with a concentration in Multimedia. Originally I am from Woodbridge, Virginia, which is about 30 minutes south of our nation’s capital. I have lived here all my life, but I’m not afraid to branch out and explore the world. This past summer I studied abroad in Sydney, Australia to engage and immerse myself in Australian culture. The experience was phenomenal and I’m already counting down the days until I can return that beautiful country. Check out my Tumblr, Instagram, Pinterest, and Facebook.
