In the past year, my mom has become passionate about the use of essential oils. She’s taken classes to learn more about the practice, bought books, and embraced the lifestyle wholeheartedly. My whole family loves it, because she’s generous enough to make us all sorts of remedies. I know I appreciated this quality in my mom when I came to school at Mount Holyoke. Not only was it hot, but also my dorm had bugs and smelled funny. The next thing I knew, my mom (the best), was sending me a care package of essential oil concoctions to improve my dorm life.

Now, we’ve collaborated to create this guide of the most essential essential oils you’ll want for college. Enjoy!

Oils

My mom gets her essential oils from Young Living, though these oils can be pricey. If this brand isn’t within your budget, you can continue your hunt for oils on Amazon.

Sprays

“Spider Spray” is to combat any arachnids you’d rather not have within your space. Put two ounces of water and eight to ten drops of peppermint essential oil into a spray bottle. Shake well before use, then spray around your window frames or wherever you need it.

“Cooling Spray” can be sprayed onto the skin for an instant cool feeling of refreshment. Put two tablespoons of water and two tablespoons of witch hazel into a two ounce spray bottle. Add four drops of peppermint oil and four drops of lavender oil. Shake well to combine the mixture, and spray directly onto the skin.

Rollers

The “Acne Roller” is to be rolled onto a pesky pimple to aid in the healing process. In a 10 ml roller bottle, put 10 drops of tea tree oil, 10 drops of lavender oil, 10 drops of lemon oil, 10 drops of frankincense oil, and top off with jojoba oil until the bottle is full. Apply directly to the skin.

The “Seasonal Allergy Roller” is for when you’re all stuffed up. In a 10 ml roller bottle, put 10 drops of lavender oil, 10 drops of lemon oil, and 10 drops of peppermint oil. Apply it behind the ears, on the wrists, and on the bottoms of feet. I like to put it on my wrists so I can smell it.

Diffusing

To sleep well, fill your essential oil diffuser with water, three drops of stress away oil, and three drops of lavender.

For focus, diffuse water with four drops of lemon oil and two drops of peppermint oil.

To help when you want to feel calmer, diffuse water with five drops of frankincense and two drops of copaiba oil.

During the cold and flu season, diffuse water and three to four drops of thieves oil to kill airborne bacteria.

I hope you enjoyed this introduction to essential oils and I hope you try some of these techniques out.
