“Who Is A Citizen?” Featured Artist and Community Poll

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at MSU chapter.

The latest exhibition at the MSU Broad Museum, called “Who Is A Citizen?” features several original multi-media works from fellow MSU students. The works all respond to the titular question in response to the artistic series “Situations” by John Lucas and Claudia Rankine.

My spoken word poem “Eres Ciudadana” is honored to be featured in this exhibition. In this poem, I honor my family’s story of immigration and citizenship to highlight systems of minority abuse in our country. Other featured artists you may know are Tashal Brown, Maggie Lupton, Gabrielle Paulina-Hamill, Vanessa Thompson, Vivek Vellanki, Kelsey Walker, and Hakeem Weatherspoon.

The College of Arts and Letters is always promoting amazing opportunities for undergraduate writers, film students, poets, and musicians. This exhibition supports artistic voices that question and challenge instances of racism and injustice in our society. Especially during a time of isolation and disconnection from our peers, it has been an excellent way to open difficult conversations and contribute to a culture of tolerance here at MSU.

The College of Arts and Letters is now hosting a community vote to determine the winner of a $500 award and we want to know what you think! Check out ALL the incredible works HERE and cast your vote HERE for the piece that speaks to you the most.

The “Who Is A Citizen?” exhibition will be featured at the Art Lab (across the street from the Broad Museum) until March 21, 2021, and the voting period ends the same day.
