Happy Belated Black History Month! Sure, it’s now March, but I think we can all agree that Black History Month being during the shortest month of the year is pretty annoying. Yet here we are. It’s still a beautiful day to uplift black women. For today’s Black History Month article, we will be admiring black women in the music industry. Here is a small list of some of my favorite incredible black queens who have gone above and beyond to pursue their passions.

Brandy

Brandy is a fantastic example of an amazing black woman who has never gone out of style. If you’re active on TikTok you’ve probably heard the viral song that goes “I’m sorry that you seem to be confused, he belongs to me, that boy is mine.” Not only is that Brandy’s song from 1998, but she has never stopped coming out with hits and successes. Not only in the music industry, but the film and modeling industries as well.

Beyonce

Obviously, the Queen Bey had to be in an article about incredible black music artists. Beyonce has received an astonishing total of 28 awards, a large number of which are Grammys. On the subject of Grammys, she actually broke the record of most Grammys won by a female artist. As if that wasn’t enough to convince you of Beyonce’s excellence, she was also the first black female to headline at Coachella, a historic moment we all fangirled over. And of course we have to mention her beautiful singing voice which most people (or at least all of the Beyhive) would say is one of, if not the, best on Earth.

Megan THEE Stallion

There’s a reason why you can’t help but say Thee with a little umph. It’s obviously because she is Thee one and only. I will, with ease, say that Megan Thee Stallion is better than us. With Grammys, BET Hip Hop and Music Awards, and MTV Video Music Awards just to name a few, she is quite literally a queen. Not to mention the fact that she graduated with a degree in Health Administration. Clearly, she can and will do everything and be the best while she’s doing it.

Corinne Bailey Rae

Corinne Bailey Rae has won both a Grammy and MOBO awards. She’s best known for the song “Girl Put Your Records On”, a personal favorite of mine, but she’s also had a number of other great hits like “Like a Star” and her cover of “Is This Love.” Her music is beautiful and if you’re looking for something chill and heartfelt to listen to, Corinne Bailey Rae is the artist to go with.

Ari Lennox

Ari Lennox is an amazing R&B singer and definitely a go to when I want relaxing, beautiful, and hot R&B. She was actually the first black woman to be signed to Dreamville Records. If that wasn’t enough for you, her Shea Butter Baby album is critically acclaimed and her song “Pressure” was at the top of the charts for three weeks.

Continue to celebrate Black History by listening to these artists all year long!
