The Disappearance of Gabby Petito and What We Know So Far

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at MSU chapter.

For those who do not know, a young woman named Gabby Petito has captured the attention of the internet by mysteriously going missing on September 11, 2021 after traveling the country in a van. Who is Gabby Petito?

Gabby Petito (22) was a pharmacy technician who met her fiancé, Brian Laundrie (23), where they both decided to go on a 4-month long van trip documenting her journey on July 2.  A month later into the trip, the police were called for a “domestic disturbance”, where both Petito and Laundrie claimed it was a small dispute. A few days later on August 19, the couple posted a YouTube video titled: “Van Life: Beginning our Van Life Journey” where all seemed well between the couple until September 11th, when Brian Laundrie was the only person to return back to Florida from the trip. Soon after Brian Laundrie was named as a “person of interest” by the FBI and National Park Services for a missing persons case. However, on September 18th, Brian Laundrie was declared missing by the FBI as he fled his Florida home.

Up until September 19th, the case of Gabby Petito was considered a missing persons case until the FBI uncovered remains that match the description of Gabby Petito, located in Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming which prompted a search warrant of the Laundrie Family Residence on September 20th. The whereabouts of Brian Laundrie are still unknown.
