We’re all here working ourselves to the bone, huh. Work, extracurriculars, even classes have each taken their own personal turn to beat the living crap out of us. We made it at least. We’re here, we’re breathing, personally I’m kind of stumbling out of this rut. At the beginning of the semester, I did absolutely nothing. I had done absolutely nothing the semester beforehand as well, and then the boredom sank in. Each night, I was absolutely filled with this intense need to do something. Literally anything would have satisfied my need to not be filled with boredom.

So, I joined things. I picked up more shifts at work, I joined a theater group on campus and even joined HerCampus. I love everything I do, but after a while of having your day filled from end to end, it starts to take a toll. I’m tired, I’m angry, I’m hating my classes, and things I used to enjoy I want to miss. I spread myself a little too thin. It’s not just me being unable to hack it. In fact, it’s science. One of my previous majors was psychology, so I can tell you with great confidence that I cannot do it all.

The Yerkes-Dodson Law explains what I like to call “the perfect storm”. Now, stay with me while I go through the logistics of it. It’s in the shape of a bell curve, on the Y-Axis is performance, and on the X-Axis is stressed. With too little, or too much stress you get no activity done, but with just the right amount of stress, performance becomes immaculate.

You see, “the perfect storm.” Me, I’m spreading myself too thin. Maybe you’re not putting enough pressure on yourself. Only you know your specific situation, but now you know it’s science. I’m gonna make some changes. Let myself rest every once and awhile. My question for you, what are you gonna do about your situation? Only you can make a difference in your own life.
