Make It Happen: How to Stick to Your New Year’s Resolutions

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at MSU chapter.

A new year means new goals and new dreams. Each January, we feel that extra motivation to finally do what we’ve always been telling ourselves to do. However, as time goes on, we may find that our motivation starts to dwindle. Try these five things in order to guarantee that 2017 is your year:

1. Keep your goals short and sweet

When we set a goal that could take months to complete, we often get discouraged and find ourselves losing motivation. If you make multiple small goals instead of one or two larger goals, you’re more likely to stick with them. Who would want to give up candy for a few months anyways?

2. Plan ahead

The best way to meet your goals is to plan for them. Sit down every Sunday and write out exactly what you’re aiming to accomplish for the coming week. Then, write down ways in which you’ll be able to accomplish these goals. Organize your thoughts so when your week gets hectic, you’ll know exactly what to do.

3. Find a strong support system

If you want to work out more, find a gym buddy. If you want to improve your grades, find a study buddy. Sometimes goals are much easier to reach when you have someone to support you along the way. Find a friend that will help encourage and motivate you day in and day out.

4. Look for inspiration

Our motivation isn’t meant to last forever. We’re humans and we’re bound to lose sight of things every once in awhile. Try to find sources of inspiration to look at when you feel like you’re about to throw in the towel. This could be certain people on Instagram or some motivational quotes from Pinterest. The possibilities are endless!

5. Treat yourself

If you’ve been working hard, make sure you reward yourself. Setting up a reward system can also help motivate you to meet your goals. For example, if your goal is to lose 20 pounds, reward yourself for every 5 pounds you lose. Your hard work and determination should always be recognized!

Remember – there are plenty of things that you can do to set yourself up for success. Work hard, stay focused and don’t get discouraged. Will a little self-love and motivation, you’ll get there!
