If you’re anything like me, winter is not your favorite time of year. The combination of cold weather and the sun setting so early makes it hard to find the motivation for many of my everyday tasks and responsibilities. This year, winter in Michigan has been particularly brutal, so I’m focusing on the little things that will help get me through it.

1. Warm drinks

When I don’t want to get out of bed in the morning on a cold winter day, I know the one thing I can always look forward to is a warm drink. Since the start of the semester, I have made it my routine to get coffee and treat myself in between classes at least once, if not several times a day. Although this is such a small act, something about carrying my cup of coffee around campus like I’m in an episode of Gilmore Girls brings me so much joy. I also love to wind down with a cup of hot chocolate when the day is over. This is truly my favorite part of each day and helps me appreciate the winter season a little bit more.

2. Cozy outfits

For the longest time, I always thought I had to sacrifice my cute outfits for warmth once winter rolled around. However, this winter I am finding ways to stay warm while also looking cute. Currently, I’m practically living in my collection of comfy sweaters, which I often take for granted until it’s August and I want to wear anything but jean shorts. When it comes to accessories, I have never felt cuter than when I am wearing fuzzy socks, a chunky scarf and a pair of earmuffs. I find this to be the easiest addition to any outfit that helps me stay warm and feel my best. Though the cold weather is many people’s least favorite part of winter, it is also a great excuse to dress as comfy and cozy as you want.

3. Pictures in the snow

After you’ve put on a cute outfit and have your coffee in hand, grab your friends for a mini winter photoshoot outside! Nothing makes me feel better than having fun and taking pictures with my friends and this winter is the perfect time to do it. I love to go to my favorite spots on campus and take turns taking photos with my friends. Not only do I end up with the best memories and cute pictures, but this also helps me appreciate the beauty of winter and the snow a little bit more.

4. Movie nights

Alternatively, on days where it’s too cold to enjoy activities outside, there’s nothing better than grabbing a blanket and watching your favorite feel-good movie. The winter is a busy time for many, which means we rarely get to slow down and take time for ourselves, making a movie night the perfect option. However, while the winter time can be very isolating, staying inside doesn’t have to be boring or lonely. Inviting your friends over for a movie night is relaxing and cost-effective for everyone. Additionally, don’t forget snacks, crafts and even board games to keep the fun going all night long.

5. Comfort food

Sometimes after a long, cold day, all we need is our favorite comfort food. For me, a warm bowl of soup never fails to cheer me up. When I have the option, I really enjoy cooking meals at home and find that this is a great stress reliever. After the whole process, not only do I have a good meal but I am ultimately in a much more relaxed state. However, if cooking meals at home isn’t an option, ordering your favorite meal or dessert is the perfect way to treat yourself.

The winter can be a hard time for many, both mentally and physically. However, it is important to not let this temporary period put a damper on your life. Allowing time for rest and relaxation, treating yourself, and spending time with loved ones are just a few ways you can make this winter a little bit easier. Finding little things to look forward to that will bring you joy is key to getting through this not-so-fun time and living a peaceful and productive life.
