At the heart of Sigma Delta Tau’s Michigan State University chapter is sophomore Paige Star. Since she has accepted the leadership position of chapter president, she has excelled at continuing the legacy of strong leaders within the organization.

Going through sorority recruitment freshman year was something that Star had been looking forward to. As an out-of-state student she wanted the close lifelong friendships that are formed within Greek life. She watched her sister flourish in the SDT chapter at the University of Maryland, making her top house an easy choice.

Once Star got her bid to join, she knew almost immediately she wanted to run for a position on the executive board. “I’ve always been the kind to do leadership positions… I had no clue what I wanted to apply for, but in the past I’ve had experience in both membership and presidency,” Star stated.

She explained she was a bit scared when she was initially offered the position of chapter president, although the excitement overshadowed the fear. Since then, she has been working her hardest to become a strong leader and role model to the rest of the members in the chapter.

“I don’t want the girls to think I’m mean, but I have to remind myself that I am a leader and what I’m doing is for the benefit of the chapter,” Star stated. “…I’ve learned so much about balance and accountability during these past two months.”

Having so many demands consistently thrown at her, she has had to find the perfect academic, social life, and sorority balance. Star has found certain methods that help keep her on top of her work, while also relying on her closest friends to hold her accountable.

Star is currently working towards a degree in special education and is taking 18 credit hours. When she is not in class, she is taking phone calls, passing on information to the chapter, and simply being a college student.

“Some days I might be answering phone calls walking class to class, and some days I have absolutely nothing going on,” Star states. “ …it’s extremely dependent on the day and what’s going on at the moment.”

With her presidency term just beginning, she is already looking forward to so many exciting events this year. She is specifically ecstatic for Formal Recruitment next fall. Being the president comes with so many incredible opportunities, but Star is most looking forward to opening the doors to the house during the recruitment rounds.

“I am the first thing these girls are going to see on the days they come in and I want to make a positive impression on them,” Star explained. She went on to talk about how it made her feel more comfortable and at home when she was initially greeted by the former president during her recruitment process.

With so much left she is hoping to accomplish during her time as Sigma Delta Tau president, Star wanted to pass on some advice to girls looking into joining Greek life. “Go in knowing you are going to find your home, and that the end result will be so rewarding no matter how terrible it may feel in the current moment. Everything happens for a reason, and just trust the process because you will end up where you are meant to be.”
