Halloween is right around the corner (I’m counting down the days!) and the talk about Halloween costumes is at an all-time high. Couples and pairing costumes are also on the radar, but in a search for finding a nice couples costume to share with your boo, it has hit me in the face that almost all of them happen to be for straight couples. Sure, you can go for a typical couples costume with your girlfriend and tweak it a little bit, but if you’re not going for a feminine-masculine vibe, wouldn’t it be nice to have a couples costume that’s meant for two girlfriends? Well look no further! Since they’re so hard to find, I’ve made it easier for you. Below is a short list of some women-loving-women Halloween couples costumes that I think would be iconic and perfect for two girlfriends that just want to have fun and look good doing it. 1. Sun and Moon
Starting off a bit abstract, dressing up as the celestial bodies of the Sun and the Moon means incorporating a lot of creativity, gold and silver, and shine into your costumes. On top of that, this couple’s costumes are intrinsically romantic as well – you two complement each other’s day!
2.Velma and Daphne (“Scooby Doo“)
After producer’s confirmed that Velma is a lesbian, there’s a lot of nuance that you can add to her friendship with Daphne! Instead of the typical Daphne and Fred look, wearing the noticeable and classic Velma and Daphne costumes will have both you and your girlfriend instantly recognized., At the same time, you’d also poke fun at how heteronormative relationships dominate children’s cartoons!
3. Raven and Starfire (“Teen Titans“)
Continuing the (heteronormative) cartoon theme, you and your girlfriend can dress up as iconic superheroes. Also incorporating a semi-light and dark theme, playing into each respective character can be a lot of fun! You also don’t need to be shy of showing skin nor being too conservative, as both of their superhero costumes can be altered to your liking and still be recognizable!
4. Bubblegum Princess and Marceline (“Adventure Time“)
If you and your girlfriend play into the black cat/golden retriever trope, this one might be the winner. Even better, they were confirmed as a couple in their show, so it’s all the more fitting. You or your girlfriend can dress in all pink while the other dons a rocker outfit, topped with an ax guitar, and you’re smooth sailing.
5. Jessie and James (“Pokémon“)
Want to do something that references video games? Well, a good Jessie and James duo (or Jessie and Jessie) from Team Rocket can fit into your upcoming costume lineup. If you or your girlfriend prefer a skirt and the other prefers pants, then this costume is simple. Also, who doesn’t like to match with their girlfriend? You can also entirely steer away from the difference between the pants and skirt and both wear a cute matching set, each with different colored hair!
Finding a Halloween costume is hard, and being a queer woman with a girlfriend should not make it harder. Even though couples costumes are still dominated by straight couples and the assumption that a couple is between a man and a woman, I hope this list helps any WLW woman who wants to spend their Halloween with their boo-tiful girlfriend!
