5 Decor Tips for the New Place

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at MSU chapter.

The excitement of the new school year, classes, friends and campus events also bring a dorm, apartment, or house that is in need of an extreme makeover. We don’t always have the time or the money to redesign the whole place, but by following these five simple tips, you will have the coziest living space and most likely be the new hangout.

Curtains

One of the most drastic changes is from this simple idea. Adding curtains to windows instantly gives rooms a more complete and finished touch. They can also block out the sun and allow you to get those extra hours of sleep. This is an opportunity to try a fun pattern or add a pop of color. Can’t put holes in the walls? No problem! Tack up those curtains using the 3M Command hooks!

Throw Pillows

Futons aren’t always the most attractive piece in the room, but by adding two interesting throw pillows, you can make it look more inviting and not to mention more comfortable to snuggle up on. Pick funky colors, patters, prints, and different textures to add flare.

Wall Art

Tired of staring at the same, plain, white four walls all day? Add some wall art! Whether it’s an Audrey Hepburn poster, the New York City skyline, or your favorite movie poster, you must hang something on your walls! Target has wall decals that pull and stick straight to the wall and are easy to take off at the end of the year. Hang up your very own art, or write out your favorite quote and frame it! MSU Union has also been having a poster sale in which the room is filled with hundreds of posters at a relatively cheap price.

Personalize

Easiest way to make your room feel more personal and comfortable is by displaying pictures of family, friends and loved ones. Buy cheap frames at Salvation Army and spray paint them to match the colors in you room. Buy a corkboard and cover it with fun memories. On tough days, it can be really good to see a loved one’s face regardless if they are there in person or not. Also, by bringing some of your favorite books, movies, candles, blankets, etc. from your room back home, you can help personalize the space and feel like you are back in your old room.

Get Creative

Pinterest is booming these days with cheap, easy, fun and resourceful ways to design on a dime. You won’t find many ideas that are better to fix up your room anywhere else. Most of the crafts on Pinterest can be done with recycled materials most likely lying around the house. For example, painting wine bottles and sticking flowers in them. Don’t be afraid to spend hours making your “College Living” pin board!

Be honest, you were looking for a way to put off studying for that exam anyways.
