12 Kawaii Core Dorm Decorations You Need

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at MSU chapter.

Although the semester has already started, it is never too late to decorate your dorm room. A bare dorm room can give the feeling of being in a prison cell, instead of being in a home. You should decorate your dorm room in a way that reflects yourself and makes you happy. This way your dorm room will feel like a second home and a safe place for you. To achieve this, you can put up pictures, posters, lights, and other room decor that matches your aesthetic. One aesthetic that you may want to achieve is kawaii core.

The origins of kawaii core come from Japan, where “kawaii” translates to “cute.” The kawaii aesthetic is composed of cute, childlike things and pastel colors (especially pink). The kawaii core’s range includes food, clothes, makeup, characters and decor. Particularly, the kawaii-themed decor can help to bring color and happiness into your room. To help put you on the right track, below is a list of all my favorite kawaii core room decorations you can find on Amazon.

1. Pink Rug

This 5×8 foot rug is the perfect addition to your dorm room, costing $54.99. The spacious rug instantly adds a large amount of color to your room. The soft, shaggy rug is also great for lounging on your floor without sitting on the hard tile.

2. Pink Rolling Cart

This pink rolling cart has three tiers and is $31.99. It is easy to assemble and can hold much of your stuff while looking aesthetically pleasing. I personally use mine to put all my miscellaneous products on to be organized and not look messy. I put drinks, lotion, skin care products, chargers, headphones, and jewelry on it. The duality of this cart is perfect for college students in dorms because you can never have enough storage space.

3. Flower Wall Decal

I love these flower wall decals. They come in a pack of 16 for $9.99. I put them on my wall to help cover up the depressing colored paint they used in my room. I loved these so much that I even bought a second pack to place as a border around my posters, making them pop more and filling the empty space on my walls. On top of their cute looks, they are also super easy to apply. All you do is peel the flowers off the sticker paper and place them where you would like. Additionally, the decals are effortless to remove, and they don’t peel the wall paint off either.

4. Cat Paw Chair Cushion

This cat’s paw chair cushion is a must for uncomfortable dorm room desk chairs. This cushion costs $32.99 and is 31.4 x 27.5 inches. It allows me to sit on my chair for a long period of time doing homework, without feeling discomfort. You can also use this cushion as a pillow or a cushion to sit on the floor with.

5. Pink Heart Self Adhesive Wall Hooks

Packing all your stuff into a tiny dorm room can be hard, but utilizing the wall space can make fitting everything in easier. These 5-piece heart-shaped, self-adhesive wall hooks are the perfect tool to create more storage space. They cost $9.98, are 40x45cm, and hold up to 10 lbs. I use my wall hooks for so many things, like hanging my keys so I don’t lose them. I also use them to hang up my tote bags, bathrobe, jackets, and even my mini broom and dustpan. These heart hooks also won’t ruin the aesthetic of your room.

6. Pink Mini Storage Container

This mini storage container is around 15x19x16.5 cm and costs $19.90. This storage container can fit perfectly on your desk and is very versatile.

Basic LED lights are out, and these 10ft cherry blossom lights are in. These lights cost $12.99 and create the perfect decoration in the daytime and lighting at night. I placed these around my window to create a border and illuminate my room in the cutest way possible.

8. Pink Bins

Having one color of storage container makes your room look more put together. And to fit the kawaii theme, this set of 6 bins is perfect for storing your things. They cost $24.99 and can hold a lot. I use mine for tank tops, socks, underwear, skin care, and cleaning products. The use of these containers is endless, and you can store them on shelves, under your bed, or in a cubicle.

9. Heart Makeup Mirror

Desktop mirrors are always the way to go, especially this pink heart mirror that’s $9.88. You can hang this on your wall or put it on a desk. I use mine to do my hair, makeup, and decoration since the mirror is so cute!

10. Cat Tapestry

This is by far my favorite product on this list. This 37.4×28.74- inch tapestry is $11.99 and perfect for your room. I hung mine right above my desk, and it’s my favorite thing to look at. I highly recommend this tapestry, especially if you love cats and zodiacs like I do.

11. Cute Desk Lamp

This flower lamp has a 360-degree bendable neck and is rechargeable. The lamp costs $16.99 and is the perfect addition to your room. I like to change the neck or stem of the lamp to bring the light closer to my paper or to be more aesthetically pleasing. I also use the mini storage part to put pencils in and even prop my phone up to watch videos.

12. Hello Kitty Throw Blanket

https://a.co/d/arntRVU

No kawaii core list could be complete without the addition of Hello Kitty. Hello Kitty and all the Sanrio characters are the biggest characters in the kawaii world and perfectly encapsulate the kawaii aesthetic. This Hello Kitty throw blanket would be a great addition to your room. The blanket is 55×39 inches and costs $15.25. Even if your comforter isn’t a bright color or pink, this throw blanket will give the illusion that you have a pink bed set to match your room. You can also lay this on your couch/futon or bring a pop of color.

Where to find more

On top of these choices, there are so many more kawaii things to choose from. My suggestion is to search on Amazon for “kawaii room decor” or “kawaii” + what you’re in the market for (for example: ‘kawaii pillowcase’). But just remember, no matter what you fill your room with, be sure that it brings you happiness and creates a sense of home.
