The Power of Empowerment!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Millersville chapter.

A few weeks ago I had the privilege to attend College Fashion Week in Brooklyn, New York, hosted by Her Campus. It was an amazing event, there were many photo booths, people to do hair and makeup, and many free goodies. Not to mention New York City is one of my favorite places ever. But despite all the obvious perks of  going the event, what I loved the most was the atmosphere of female positivity and empowerment.

The fashion show displayed what they called The Real Runway. Rather than having professional models walk the catwalk, actual college girls like you and me were the ones running the show. Each model was cheered for and applauded as they walked, it was just great to see an atmosphere and positivity between young women.

It got me thinking, what if girls were always like that? I feel like in our Instagram day and age, everything is a competition: who has the best vacation, the prettiest smile, the most loving significant other, the hottest beach body. What if we spent the same amount of time that we do worrying about how we are perceived to making sure our lady friends are feeling loved and beautiful? Too often girls are negative to each other about the pettiest things, we as young women are not in competition, we’re partners in the war against the pressures of society. The most beautiful girls are the ones who are comfortable in their own skin and make sure others feel that same confidence. So put on your party dress or gym clothes, high heels or sneakers, and know that you can do anything, and tell your girlfriend the same. Let’s do this ladies!
