McGill Event Highlight of the Month: TEDxMcGill

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at McGill chapter.

At a place like McGill where our campus is always overflowing with interesting and cool student clubs, events, or conferences, it can sometimes be hard to find smaller events or even decide which ones you want to check out depending on your interests. That is why this week, HerCampus wants to take some time to highlight a very cool conference coming up just this month: TEDxMcGill.

I’m sure all of you are familiar with TED Talks by now. Whether you’ve seen one while exploring on Youtube, or whether you’ve watched one in one of your classes, these videos have all left us feeling motivated and inspired one way or another. That’s why we are curious and excited about the annual TEDxMcGill conference happening this month on November 24th. The “x” in TEDx simply means that the event is an independently organized TED event. This means that TEDxMcGill is officially licensed by TED to hold McGill’s own TED conference, here at our own campus. This year, it seems like the theme for TEDxMcGill is “Climbing Ladders”. After taking a brief look at their website, the purpose of this theme is to bring up and answer some questions that we all ask ourselves as we go through life. On their website, TEDxMcGill asks: “What have we overcome to get to where we are today? Is where we are, good enough? Can we go higher, do better? What personal journeys have we all gone through to be the person we are today?”

As students approaching our twenty-somethings, and as we all prepare ourselves to enter the “real world”, these questions can hit close to home. As we prepare for our future and start exploring the rest of our lives, these questions can be asked to reflect on how far we have come, but also how we hope to move forward in our journey. These questions are ones that I have asked myself personally, as I have started to think about my future and what kind of person I want to be. We hope that through listening to stories and the journeys of the speakers at this conference (we hear that there will be two students of our own speaking as well!) based on these questions can help us think and reflect about our potential paths and journeys through life.

For further information about the event (tickets, speakers, etc.) be sure to be on the lookout on their Facebook page and their website for any updates:
