5 Healthy Snack Alternatives

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Manhattan chapter.

If you’re like me, you really like junk food and nothing can possibly separate you from your favorite sacks. But the truth is it’s really not good for you. As we get older, our metabolism starts to slow down and eventually unhealthy snacking will start to take a toll on our bodies, both physically and mentally. So what are you supposed to do when the thing you like the most is what’s hurting you? You have to make compromises. You can still eat those unhealthy snacks on occasion, but for the most part, you should start to eat alternative foods that contain similar ingredients in order to satisfy your normal cravings in a much healthier way.

  1. Instead of potato chips, try rice snacks.

If you’re looking for something that gives you the same crunch as a potato chip but without all the grease and fat, try rice cakes. They make them in all different flavors and they’re great to use different spreads on.

2. Instead of French fries, try a baked potato.

I know nothing beats a nice crispy French fry, but when a small order of fries comes in at over 200 calories, it’s hard to argue that sacrificing the deep fried goodness for a healthier baked version isn’t the better idea.

3. When choosing candy bars, opt for dark chocolate.

Dark chocolate is usually significantly lower in calories due to the fact that it doesn’t contain as much added sugar and dairy. Dark chocolate has also been linked to many different health benefits including anti-inflammatory agents for the heart.

4. Instead of ice cream, try frozen yogurt or sorbet.

Both frozen yogurt and sorbet are good alternatives for ice cream because they still satisfy the craving for a cold treat. They are usually less fattening, but some flavors may contain a lot of sugar so be mindful when choosing a flavor. When choosing your new frozen treat, opt for something like tart frozen yogurt with fresh fruit on top.

5. Instead of cookies, try a granola bar.

KIND Bars, Nuts and Spices Variety Pack, Gluten Free, 1.4 Ounce Bars, 12 Count. $21.67 at Amazon.com

A problem is that a large number of granola bars are high in fat because of all of the different nuts and oils that are used to make them. With careful selection, you could find ones with good ingredients and flavors that are healthy and also satisfy your cravings.
