Sam Smith Shares All With Jameela Jamil

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Lancaster chapter.

You may or may not have heard of I Weigh, an Instagram account come community led by Jameela Jamil, who encourages individuals from all backgrounds to share their body positive messages and images.

Part of this movement saw internationally renowned singer, Sam Smith, share his body image struggles with Jameela Jamil on Instagram T.V.

As is heavily focused upon in the interview, men typically shy away from being open about their body struggles, with issues of toxic masculinity fooling men into believing that they should “man up”.

It is therefore refreshing to see a singer with a position of influence being so open about his past and previous struggles with his weight and mental health.

A particularly raw moment in the interview sees Smith confessing that if he had the time again, he would choose not to be famous. When questioned why, he discusses his continously low mood and scutiny by the media that he faces on a daily basis.

I think that the interview proved that everyone, regardless of their background, struggles with self-acceptance. The more we talk about it, the less alone we are in our issues and the better we will feel. Image from IGTV

You can watch Sam Smith’s interview on Jameela Jamil’s Instagram T.V. now, and it is also due to be uploaded onto YouTube.
