Why You Need To Start Having Self-Care Nights

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at KU chapter.

It is that time of the year where the grind seems to never end. We are deep into the school year, completely controlled by our academic schedules. I feel like I’m in a continuous cycle of waking up exhausted, down caffeine, grind on school work, more caffeine, more grinding, and going to bed in the AM. This is why a self-care night is so important for me every once in a while.

A self-care night is like a breath of fresh air. I like to self-care right before the weekend to cleanse all the nasty schoolwork out of my brain and relieve all my stress.

Step 1: Light Workout

I like to start by doing an easy workout like power walking on the treadmill and light weights to start my night. Exercising, even if it’s not very much, gets energy out of your system, will make you sleep better, and puts you in a better mood.

Step 2: Sauna

This is so extra but honestly feels so good. I tell myself I am sweating out toxins and opening my pores. Who knows if that’s true or not. It’s just relaxing, dammit. Also, shoutout to Crunch Fitness.

Step 3: Shower

By shower I mean shampoo, rinse, repeat, exfoliate, scrub, and shave. This shower should take about 45 minutes if it’s a real good one. The goal here is to be as squeaky clean as possible. I’m going to leave the picture out on this one.

Step 4: Face Masks

You knew this was coming. What would a self-care night be without a face mask?

Step 5: Tea

I always like to make a warm cup of green tea (non caffeinated). Drinking tea is so relaxing and enjoyable, in my opinion. There are also plenty of health benefits like improving brain function and increasing the rate at which you burn fat. I also had gluten-free pumpkin bread because it’s so fall, duh.

Step 6: Beauty Care

The final step of my self-care routine is to some glam prepping for the weekend. This typically includes painting my nails, plucking my eyebrows, self-tanning, all that jazz. Look good, feel good, you know?

Hello! I'm nineteen years old and from a suburb outside Chicago, IL. In my free time, I like to read and write, play with makeup, and spend time with my friends. On the KU campus, I'm majoring in the Strategic Communications side of Journalism with a minor in Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies. I'm also a member of the Gamma Phi Beta sorority. I hope you have as much fun reading my articles as I do writing them :)
