Being a college student means meeting the high demands from professors, institutions, and yourself. Most students tend to believe that being productive and studying is for the purpose of maintaining and earning good grades. However, having healthy study habits helps you sustain a healthy life- in more ways than you’d think!
Creating a balanced schedule
While it may be difficult to know how much time to dedicate to each assignment, having consistent study habits builds a realistic and balanced schedule.
What time do you prefer to study?
That ‘simple’ question helps you plan the hours around studying (or rather building hours of studying into your everyday routine). Knowing what time of the day you are the most productive for academics allows you to consistently dedicate that time to studying.
Recognize when you don’t want to study.
Despite knowing what times of the day you work best at, having a healthy relationship with studying means being able to comfortably rearrange or miss that time on occasions.
For example, I know that I want to attend every home football game and that Tuesdays are my day to rest after classes. By having days and times that I would like to disengage with academics, I know when I need to prioritize studying and find alternative times to complete my work.
Preparation for a full-time job
Having a good work-life balance starts with having healthy study habits!
While being a full-time student is truly a full-time job, in the post-graduation world, all that study time gets combined into work hours.
- Productive study sessions will help prepare you to be productive during work hours- manage your time individually!
- Studying helps critical thinking that will be expected in your future place of work.
- Group projects help you practice teamwork and communication, which are soft skills employers value.
- Learning new subjects regularly trains you to adjust to unfamiliar tasks quickly.
Every workplace may look different with different expectations but, healthy study habits help you prepare to meet any challenge!
Have fun in any situation
I will never argue that studying itself is fun but, healthy study practices can transform stressful situations into manageable, and even fun, conditions.
- Built in breaks in studying will help you recognize when you need a moment to decompress in a non-academic setting.
- Finishing your work on time acts as a trade-off, letting you have relaxing or fun moments later without worrying.
- Having a designated study time can remind you that tough situations are temporary and you can overcome them!
At the end of the day, healthy study habits are about so much more than getting good grades. College is a time to learn, grow, work hard, and most importantly; enjoy the experience along the way! So, give yourself permission to take breaks, make time for the things you love, and find a study routine that works for you. Your future self (and your GPA) will thank you! ππβ¨
