Self-Help Books I’m Currently Reading That You Should Too

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Kent State chapter.

Self-help books have become increasingly more popular as people are growing more attentive to important things like self-care and positive thinking. I am personally a huge fan of self-help books, as I find many of them to be full of advice and wisdom I would not be able to get anywhere else. However, because these types of books are becoming so popular, a lot more are being written. This results in some books that try their best to be helpful, but the advice they give just doesn’t dig deep enough below the surface to really influence a person’s life. I know I’ve experienced this problem while reading before, so today I am introducing some books that actually do give great and profound advice. These are my recommendations for the best self-help books that I am currently reading, and I think you should be too.

“Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear” by Elizabeth Gilbert

You may be familiar with the name Elizabeth Gilbert, as she is the author of best-selling novels like Eat Pray Love and City of Girls. Gilbert has changed her course with the writing of Big Magic, which has the aim of encouraging anyone and everyone to live a creative existence. She helps the reader to realize that being creative doesn’t just mean you can paint a pretty picture or write a wonderful story; humans are creative by their very existence. Creativity is the act of bringing something new into existence, whatever that may be. Gilbert shares her own insight and experiences with finding inspiration in life, whether it came sprinting at her or was hiding somewhere, waiting to be found. The back cover of the book reads, “Whether we are looking to write a book, make art, find new ways to address challenges in our work, embark on a dream long deferred, or simply infuse our everyday lives with more mindfulness and passion, Big Magic cracks open a world of wonder and joy.”

Though I’m not done with the book, I’ve already started to see the essences of creativity and inspiration in a completely new light! I also think this book is easy to read, and I’ve already underlined so many sentences in these pages.

“The Secret” by Rhonda Byrne

Have you heard about the Law of Attraction? If you haven’t, I’m a bit surprised, as so many celebrities, YouTubers, media personalities and people, in general, are finding out about this amazing secret. The Secret is a book by Rhonda Byrne that has achieved global sensation for its incredible insight on our lives: we can have anything we want, just by changing our thoughts into positive and grateful ones. That’s right, Byrne describes the Law of Attraction and how understanding it will change our lives into everything we dream of. I’m not going to go into details about what the Law of Attraction is, so you’ll have to read the book to find that out. This book has seriously been a life-changer for me, and I think if you give it a read, you’ll be so happy that you did!

“The Four Agreements” by don Miguel Ruiz

This book, along with anything by don Miguel Ruiz for that matter, feels like a man is coming from ancient times to give you all the golden wisdom you will ever need in life. Don Miguel Ruiz’s writing is based on ancient Toltec wisdom, and for this reason, it is so unique. The Four Agreements is perhaps the author’s most well-known book, and for good reason. It presents a sort of code of conduct for people to follow, summarized into four “agreements”. The author teaches us how to combat self-limiting beliefs and suffering, and he claims that these agreements can “transform our lives to a new experience of freedom, true happiness, and love”. “The Mastery of Self” by don Miguel Ruiz Jr.

Remember the book I just talked about? Well, that author’s son is here now with the same name and an amazing writing style like his dad’s! The Mastery of Self by don Miguel Ruiz Jr. has the goal of teaching us to do exactly what the title says: gain control over our life. The author helps us to realize that some of the toughest challenges to overcome in life are the ones we have created for ourselves. The back of the book reads, “much of our suffering occurs when we forget that we are the architects of our own reality, and we have the power to change our Dream if we choose.” By saying “our Dream”, the author is referring to the unique reality and personal perspective of every individual. I enjoy don Miguel Ruiz and his son’s writings so much, and I recommend them to anyone who is looking for unique advice that goes deeper under the surface than what we typically experience.

I hope I’ve influenced you to pick up some of these books the next time you visit a bookstore or library! As I read them, I can literally feel the lessons I’m learning from them changing my life. I recommend these books so highly, and I can’t wait to finish them. Happy reading!
