Hacks to Make your Life as a Flash Easier

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Kent State chapter.

Midterms have already begun, and you’re probably trying not to go crazy with keeping up with assignments, working and going to events for your club or sorority. Here are a few little-known tips to make your semester, and your remaining years at Kent, a little less stressful.

The cheapest place to eat on campus: Are you hundreds of dollars over your meal plan? Come to Rosie’s Diner at Tri Towers. Bonus: they’re open 24/7 and serve breakfast all day. You can get a breakfast sandwich or a waffle for less than $5.

Best place to study: It’s no surprise that the library is as crowded during midterms and finals as a church on Christmas Day. Try venturing downtown to the Kent Free library, located on West Main Street.

Best time to go to the rec: Like the library, the rec is usually crowded, and you find yourself stalking the elliptical area, waiting for one to open. The best time to go to the rec is on Sunday evenings because everyone is doing the homework they procrastinated on.

Easiest Kent core classes: Need to boost your GPA and also earn a science credit? Take Science of Human Nutrition with Tanya Falcone; she offers extra credit just for coming to class. Life on Planet Earth is also an easy class. It mainly consists of watching videos.

How to get free Chipotle: You read it right. Those burrito bowls with a side of chips and guacamole add up. The American Red Cross gives students Chipotle gift cards for donating blood. You can donate blood at the student center or Tri Towers. Free chipotle and you get to save lives? It’s a win, win situation.

Get involved: Finding your place on campus can be overwhelming considering Kent offers hundreds of organizations and clubs. Check out the office of the Center for Student Involvement on the second floor of the student center to pick up a list of the registered clubs on campus. Getting involved is a great way to learn time management skills and meet people.

Find work: Trying to save up to study abroad, or just in need of some spending money for the weekends? Go to your FlashLine account and select the “Student Career Path” tab.  Then click on “Find Positions” in “Flash@Work.” Create an account and from there you’ll be able to search for jobs on campus and in the surrounding area.

Eat healthy: Avoid the infamous freshman 15 by skipping fries covered in cheese and pork from the food truck and opt for a lighter dish. Salmon and rice from Eastway or Kent Market I is a super healthy and delicious meal.

Bored and broke? Have you finished the complete series of Gossip Girl for the fifth time? Come to the Kiva on Fridays at 11 p.m. or Saturdays at 8 or 11 p.m. to enjoy a movie before it’s released on Netflix or DVD. Some upcoming movies this semester are “Burnt” staring Bradley Cooper,  “Sisters” with Tina Fey and Amy Poehler and “Ride Along 2” staring Ice Cube and Kevin Hart. Be sure to follow the Kent Student Center Programming on Twitter and check their website to stay updated with the latest free events.

Show school pride: Don’t spend $40 on a Kent State hoodie from the bookstore. Check out Campus Book & Supply for better deals on apparel and accessories. The store offers crewneck sweatshirts with Love Kent printed on the front, a play on Love Pink by Victoria’s Secret PINK. They can be styled with just about anything and are less than $20.
