With a rising number of people across the UK experiencing mental illnesses coinciding with the increasingly busy world that is slowly in the process of recognising the necessity of maintaining fit mental health, organisations such as My Mind Matters Too are becoming more and more important in the fight dismantling stigmas around mental illness and mental health.

My Mind Matters Too is a student-led organisation, founded by King’s College’s very own Meg Zeenat Wamithi. It’s is a mental health consultancy that strives to put students’ and young people’s voices at the centre of the work they do. The team is currently running an ongoing campaign calling for more transparency and awareness surrounding mental health in collaboration with King’s College London and various charities.

Next week, on Thursday 7th February, My Mind Matters Too will be hosting their first ever Spotlight session on Time to Talk Day. This event is set to be an empowering and safe space for students to come together to share their journeys of navigating mental health and mental illnesses. Currently announced to be appearing on the discussion panel are activist, campaigner and author Paul McGregor and Ellen Jones, an avid campaigner and content creator. The session will take place in room K4U.12 on Strand Campus from 6pm. The evening will begin with an open discussion forum followed by a drinks reception. Every single person is affected by mental health in some capacity whether directly or indirectly, and My Mind Matters Too will be offering support, resources and open minds and ears during this event and thereafter.

Tickets for the Spotlight event are only £2 to support the admirable hard work of the My Mind Matters Too team and can be purchased here: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/time-to-talk-day-spotlight-tickets-53831666965

The introduction of events like this at King’s demonstrates how institutions and individuals have a duty in looking after not only our own mental health, but those around us. It takes a village. And the road isn’t always an easy one, but understand and know that there are so many people who are willing to lend an ear and a shoulder to lean on. Please don’t ever feel like you have to go through anything alone. Reach out. We’re here for you.

And to My Mind Matters Too, thank you for the steps you’re taking in making King’s a more inclusive and safe environment when it comes to discussions around mental health. I’m excited for the launch of Spotlight and looking forward to great events in the future too.
