How to Stay Healthy (Physically and Mentally) This Winter

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Jefferson chapter.

It can often be hard to keep your healthy routine of going to the gym and eating clean when the weather gets cold; but it’s more important that you keep yourself mentally healthy.

Cold weather can often put people in a negative mindset

Seasonal depression is a real thing- and most of us can experience it at one point or another. When the temperature begins to drop below 40 and it gets dark before 6; most people just want to lay in bed and do nothing. Make sure to keep a healthy mindset and remember that this dark time won’t last forever.

Going to the gym may seem like the last thing you want to do

Getting up and walking that 15 minutes to the gym may seem like the last thing in the world that you want to do when it’s 35 degrees outside- but you will feel so much better after you finish your workout. Even if it’s only 30 minutes of cardio, your body releases all of that stress and endorphins at the gym.

Healthy Food = Healthy Heart & Head

Believe it or not, eating fruits and vegetables, and drinking lots of water puts you in a much better mood then the junk food we’d all preferably be eating. It’s been proven that healthy food and water instead of soda or caffeinated drinks can improve your mood, and don’t we all just want to be happy? :)

Talk to someone if you are feeling down

Lacking the sun in the winter also means we’re all lacking vitamin D. We’re also lacking those beach and ice cream trips that make us happy. If you are ever feeling down this winter, make sure you reach to a friend, family member, or therapist. You never know what someone else is going through, so always remember to be nice!!
