5 Things To Keep In Mind When The Glass Feels Half Full

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Howard chapter.

From the uncertainty surrounding COVID-19, to the seemingly endless fight for social justice, to the untimely deaths of those who inspire us, it would be an understatement to say that 2020 has been a crazy year.

While it can be extremely difficult to remain positive when the world seems to be worsening by the second, the fact of the matter is, we must.

There is nothing to be gained from a prolonged sense of negativity, and an ill mindset breeds nothing but ill circumstance and tainted perception.

We are not in control of all that happens in the world, but we are in control of how we view the world, and most importantly, how we view ourselves.

So here are five affirmations to keep in mind when the light seems to be dimming, and the glass feels half full.

“I am exactly where I need to be.”

As much as we might want to sometimes, we cannot go back and change the past.

Life consists of a series of choices, and out of all the choices you could have potentially made up to this point, you unlocked the code that brought you to this moment–right here, right now. You are exactly where you are meant to be, and the present serves as preparation for your future. Do not give up on it.

“I am already equipped with everything that I need to attain what I desire.”

We all serve to benefit from seeking more, but being aware of your capacity to pursue more indicates that you are already in possession of an important and valuable trait: ambition. Your dreams, desires and manifestations are already yours–you just have to work to receive them.

“My emotions are valid, and I am allowed to have them.”

Emotions are not a burden, and expressions of them do not make you weak. You are allowed to feel things, and even more so, you are allowed to work through your emotions on your own terms. Cry them out, scream them out, write them out. The choice is yours, and it is valid.

“Small moments do not determine the outcome of my whole day.”

No day is perfect, meaning that we are bound to experience small bouts of negativity, but this does not mean that the entire day will bring negativity. The things that inconvenience our days do not have the power to change the course of the day unless we allow it to. Acknowledge the moment, acknowledge your emotions associated with it, and allow yourself to move on.

“I am the owner of my own peace.”

The only person that can bring you peace is yourself, and peace can be found in anything. Whether your peace is felt through a warm breeze when you step outside, or an episode of your favorite show, it belongs to you. Make it a conscious effort to seek peace in all that you do. You deserve it.

Even a glass that seems to be half full still contains something, and something is better than nothing. So take a sip from that glass, and remind yourself that you are worth much more than all of the world’s turmoil. You didn’t make it this far for nothing.
