This year, spring break looks a little different for some of us. Instead of scrolling through Instagram wishing you were on a tropical island, make the most of your break by taking a break. Like, a real break. It’s time to indulge in some major self-care, so here are some of my goals for this spring break.

Social Media Detox

Like any college student, I love a good Instagram doom scroll. This year, I’ve been working on creating a more positive relationship with social media, and I’ve been pretty successful in this regard. I post whatever I want — solo shots, blurry group pictures, memes, throwbacks, you name it, I’ve posted it. However, no matter how good one’s relationship with social media is, at the end of the day it’s not a good thing.

Another part of my journey with managing my experience on social media involves time restraints on all platforms, which has been great for my mental health and sleep schedule (although I have been known to click “15 more minutes” on my Tik Tok time limit more than once). During spring break, I’m taking my restrictions one step further and doing a full social media detox. My favorite way to take a break from social media is to delete all of the apps from my phone. I’ve found myself much less likely to go on any platform if it’s not on my phone. It’s very rewarding for your mental health to take a break from social media for obvious reasons. I promise it’s much easier than it sounds. You might not even want to redownload the apps after the detox is up!

Spend Time in the Fresh Air and Sunshine

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again — nature is healing. Spend as much time outside as you can. Sunshine and fresh air are instant mood boosters, and who doesn’t feel better after getting a tan?! BUT, don’t forget your sunscreen! Skin care is self-care!!

Read for Fun

As an English major, I understand the pain of required reading. Despite my love of books, I struggle with any reading material that is assigned for class. As a result, I can get reading burnout, which bums me out big time. Taking the time to indulge in a book that I actually want to read always cures my burnout, so I make it a priority to read for fun during breaks. If you, like me, are really missing the luxury of reading on a beach, try taking your beach ride to your porch or backyard. The background noises of screaming toddlers isn’t as relaxing as that of waves crashing on the shore, but the sunshine makes up for it.

Check out some of my posts with reading recommendations if you need some inspo!

However you choose to spend your break, make sure to take some time to take care of yourself. You deserve it!
