My Experience Rediscovering Yoga

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Holy Cross chapter.

This past Wednesday I was debating going to the gym. Not really feeling like doing my usual routine, I decided to check and see if there were any openings for a spin class at the Jo. I saw that there were spots left in the yoga class instead, and I impulsively decided to go.

I took some yoga classes with friends and family occasionally throughout middle and high school. Although at times I had enjoyed it, I never felt like I got anything out of it. At the time, I was always doing different sports and dancing, so yoga felt too slow for me. I had never really embraced the yoga classes I had taken.

Because I took this class so impulsively, I had no expectations for myself. The week had been stressful, so I had a lot on my mind. Despite the stress once I arrived, I made myself fully present to take this class.

The instructor was so lovely. The class was the perfect in-between by not being too challenging or easy. By the end of it, I felt so grounded.

I highly recommend taking a yoga class even if you have never taken one before. They are free at the Jo with plenty of spots to fill for sign-ups each week. Yoga has countless benefits from improving stretch, balance, and flexibility to helping with stress management. You will have more mental clarity and feel grounded as long as you are open to embracing the experience. So, the next time you’re thinking about a trip to the Jo, consider a yoga class!
