5 Ways to Stay Healthy When Your Friends Are Sick

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Hofstra chapter.

The season of being sick is upon us, and it seems like everywhere you look, someone is coming down with something. If you want to stay healthy among the sea of your sick friends and coworkers, this is the article for you. Here are five tips to help you fight of all the germs that come your way!

Take Vitamin C, even when you aren’t feeling sick

A lot of people take vitamin C when they start to feel sick. The real trick here it to take it before you start to feel anything happening, that way your body builds up an immunity while it’s healthy. During flu seasons, or just the winter/spring months in general when everyone is coming down with colds, pop a vitamin once a day to strengthen your immune system. You can find them at any drugstore or online!

Sanitize EVERYTHING you use on a daily basis

Go to the store, buy disinfectant wipes, and get to work! You’ll want to sanitize anything you use on a day-to-day basis, because these things carry germs that you will come in contact with throughout each day. Sanitize your phone, door handles, your keys, your laptop, your pens, your desk, EVERYTHING!!! Do this a few times a week.

Open your window and let in some fresh air

Even when it’s cold outside, you should always crack your window open at least once a week to get fresh air circulating in your living space. Stagnant air carries a TON of germs, and you are breathing all of that in until you let the fresh air clean out your space. Opening the windows is one of the oldest tricks in the book for killing germs!

Be mindful of what you’re eating and how much water you drink everyday

This goes without saying, but eating more fruits and veggies will boost your immune system. You need the essential vitamins provided in fruits and vegetables to feel your best, so try to incorporate more of them into your diet when everyone around you is sick. Also, staying hydrated is a cure all for anything and everything, so make sure your daily water intake is plentiful.

Bring hand sanitizer everywhere and use it like you’ve never used it before

Everyone should have hand sanitizer on them at all times. I can’t go anywhere without at least one hand sani on my person. Sanitize your hands when you are unable to wash them with soap and water after coming in contact with things that everyone touches, and especially after touching other people’s hands. Use it after you get off the train or subway, after a sweaty handshake with that new guy you just met, after you touch the buttons on the elevator, before you sit down and eat your lunch on the go, after you use a desktop in the library, pretty much just use it all the time.

These tips in combination with basic hygiene tips, like not sharing food or drink and makeup with your friends, as well as getting enough rest every night, will help you fight the germs that seem to be surrounding you everywhere you go! Stay healthy, ladies and gents.
