Why my 2020 Resolutions are Focused on Mental Health and Well-Being

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Hampton U chapter.

When making my goals for the new year, I really took the time to reflect on the past year and the things I really would like to see a change in. I wanted my goals to dip deeper this year. One of the things I noticed needed attention was my mental health and mind. Below are a few of my goals for 2020 that focus more on that.

Attend therapy

In 2019, I realized the importance of mental health and a healthy mind. I truly want to dig deeper within myself to figure out why I do the things I do and how to properly deal with my emotions. With the recent loss of my dad at the end of the year, I really struggled to process my emotions and I believe therapy with really help me.

Do a social media cleanse

I catch myself getting caught up scrolling on social media when I could be doing something more productive with my time. I run a lot of social media pages, posting and engaging with Instagram, so taking a break would free up a lot of my time. I’ve heard so many positive things come out of social media cleanses. People have picked up new healthy habits, learned new things and have been more productive with their 24 hours so I can’t wait to start.

Give up beef and pork for the entire year

With all the stuff going around about meat, I feel like it would be a healthier decision to give up beef and pork, two of the meats that are one unhealthy and make you gain a lot of weight. One of my goals every year is to work out or lose weight but I feel giving up these meats would help with that. So far, chicken is my best friend and it’s really not that bad.

Write more creative pieces

In 2019, I really had writer’s block the entire semester and hate publishing something just because I have to. In 2020, I hope to write more and be more creative with what I write. During my freshman year, I wrote a lot of great pieces and hope to tap into that again.

Read four books this year

Wanting to stimulate my mind, I plan to read more this year. I got a lot of books for Christmas that have been sitting in my Pinterest board so I can’t wait to read them. I’m currently reading Leave Your Mark by Aliza Licht. I’ve learned so much about securing internships, and the professional world in just the first couple of chapters.

Do more for my community

As a citizen and Christian, I feel like it’s my duty and job of mine to help others. My father especially has shown me the importance of giving back and how community service is a great humbler. My love language is acts of service so I love being able to make someone else’s day and help them in some sort of way. Something I especially want to do if not this year, sometime in the near future is to go on a mission trip or community service trip where I can impact someone else’s life and give me another perspective of life.

Tap into talents and God’s given purpose

In 2019, God and other people have shown me how talented I am and the different gifts I possess. It’s only right in 2020 to start tapping into them and sharing them with the world. At the end of the day, that’s all that matters.

While I do have other goals, these were the ones that I feel are doing my mind, body, and soul the most service. I encourage everyone to add some deeper and beneficial goals to their list. Goals that have a long-term effect on your well-being is better than any normal goal. I hope I inspired someone!
