A Non-Athlete’s Guide To Working Out

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Hampton U chapter.

Quarantine ruined many people’s plans for the summer and their life goals overall, but it also offered a pause that some of us needed to just sit down and focus. Many people took this time to attain all the goals they truly wanted.

My goal during quarantine was to become healthier and to start working out more. Ladies, let me tell you – it’s hard to start working out but once you get in the rhythm of things, it’s not bad at all. It’s actually a stress reliever sometimes. So here are some tips to begin working out for all my ladies who, like me, aren’t athletic.

Start slow

Set all your goals extremely low so you’re never reaching too far and you don’t end up only completing half of the exercise. In the beginning I only did the treadmill for 30 minutes each day or I would go out walking/slow jogging. It was nothing major and I was never over extending my body but it allowed my body to gradually get used to the new change I was making. I then started doing Chloe Ting ab workouts with the treadmill and my stamina began to increase. It’s all about letting your body catch up to your goals and then you can take off from there.

Use sticky notes

There were many times when I just wanted to give up especially in quarantine. I began to put sticky notes up on my mirror or my desk just reminding myself to work out and to keep trying to attain my workout goals. Once I saw the notes, I had to turn the TV off and get off of that couch. A reminder to yourself can go a long way.

Eat right

Now this one is a lot harder than people make it seem but this is also a gradual process. I didn’t go vegan or vegetarian but if I had meat for breakfast or lunch I would try to have another source of protein for the next meal. I also stopped eating before my stomach gained that tight feeling because that’s how people tend to gain weight and I also cut out snacking. Just gradual things like this can go a long way and little things can turn into major lifestyle changes.

Know your body

My last tip is to know your body. No one knows your body better than you. I know it can be easy to get distracted by what your friends’ bodies look like or how these fitness gurus eat. You can get swayed by everything they do to get this “perfect image.” The truth is you all are beautiful and every single body is beautiful but working out can be a massive stress reliever. It’ll make you feel good to know that you’re on a route to better your lifestyle.

Just know your body and your limits and you all will be ready to begin this change. I know working out can seem very daunting sometimes-but trust and believe that if I can do it, you all definitely can!

See you all in the next workout video!
