Pink Week: Period Packing Party

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at GSU chapter.

The period packing party with The Cycle, a student organization at GSU, was a phenomenal closing to our Her Campus Pink Week! We packaged feminine hygiene products at SafeHouse Outreach, a non-profit organization based in Downtown Atlanta. Keep reading to learn about the importance behind this service event!

Access to Feminine Hygiene Products

In these times, people are struggling more than ever financially. For homeless and low-income women, feminine hygiene products are not easily accessible. Without money or transportation, unless a shelter or non-profit organization steps in, these women cannot get period products. In addition, homeless women are particularly vulnerable to theft, assault, harsh weather and other intervening obstacles that make it difficult to keep period and hygiene products. This is why community service events like the period packing party are important; especially in Downtown Atlanta, where homelessness continues to be a pervasive issue in the community.

Between the seven of us volunteers, we packed over 100 bags of period and feminine hygiene products, such as soap, wipes, pads, tampons, and so on. SafeHouse Outreach will be distributing these period product kits to the local downtown Atlanta community. Drew Benton, the SafeHouse Outreach volunteer director, informed us about the purpose of the non-profit organization: helping the homeless get back on their feet.

Giving back to the local communities we live, work, and attend school in was the perfect wrap-up to this year’s Her Campus Pink Week. In the challenging times brought about by the pandemic, it’s more important than ever that we stand together in our communities.
