From Panther to Panther, a GSU Survival Guide: Part 2

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at GSU chapter.

At Georgia State, a school that is so diverse in students, majors, and interests, there are multiple resources available here that reflect every need. These resources exist not only to help you but to guide you through your college career. However, a challenge for many students is knowing what resources are offered and where to begin looking for them.

No need to keep looking! I’ve compiled a list of ten helpful resources that are guaranteed to give you the assistance you may need while at GSU.

Please note: Some of the resources listed below may experience changes in location and available services due to COVID-19.

Career Advancement Center

Calling all business students, this one’s for you! The Career Advancement Center is a career center specifically designed for business students. There, you’ll be able to receive professional development, receive job search tools, and get in-the-know about upcoming career fairs catered towards majors in the J. Mack Robinson College of Business.

CATLab

The Creation and Technology Lab (CATLab) is the center for, indeed, all things technology. Here, you have access to printing, multimedia equipment, a professionally-equipped audio lab, and more to help assist you in your classwork along with your creative projects.

CIRCLE

If you’re a foreign language major or minor or looking to begin learning a new language, the Center for International Resources & Collaborative Language Engagement (CIRCLE) has all of the resources you need to improve your language-speaking skills. Tutoring is available in the following languages: French, German, Spanish, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Arabic, and American Sign Language.

Additionally, feel free to browse from their large international movie collection, utilize specialized language-learning software like Rosetta Stone or Mango Languages, and use their audio recording or editing software to practice your language proficiency.

LaunchGSU

For those interested in entrepreneurship, LaunchGSU is an excellent resource to help build your business from the ground up and even grow your skills and knowledge in this area. It provides you with mentorship opportunities and chances to connect, collaborate, and create with other aspiring entrepreneurs. The Fall 2020 membership application is currently open until October 2nd, so be sure to apply soon!

Leadership Programs

Having leadership skills will not only take you far in your career but also in life. If you’re looking to brush up on the leadership skills you already have or even develop new ones, Leadership Programs is the place to go. Here, you can choose from a wide variety of programs and activities to participate in.

Attend the three-day retreat Panther Leadership Academy, take part in the Women’s Leadership Experience program, or even improve your communication skills with the Leaders Communicate series. Whichever one you choose, you’ll be on your way to reaching your ultimate leadership potential.

Scholarship Resource Center

College can be – no, actually, is – expensive. To make sure that you’ll be able to pay for your school expenses, applying for scholarships is one of the best decisions to make. At the Scholarship Resource Center, you’ll receive the ultimate support and assistance in your scholarship search.

Here, you can attend workshops that give all of the 411 on scholarships, schedule guidance meetings with an SRC team member, and browse through thousands of scholarships offered by the school and external scholarship websites.

STEM Tutoring

STEM Tutoring is the go-to resource for when you’re having trouble in any of your STEM courses. With tutoring available in biology, chemistry, computer science, geosciences, mathematics, and physics, you’ll be matched with a tutor and have anywhere from 10, 20, or 30 minutes to receive help.

TRIO Student Support Services

If you’re a first-generation college student, demonstrate financial need, and/or have a documented disability, TRIO is a great resource to use for support during your college career. From academic advisement, individualized tutoring, and even financial aid assistance, this center is dedicated to guiding you through your college experience and ensuring that you’re able to perform at the best of your ability.

University Career Services

University Career Services is a valuable resource to use when looking to advance in your career-readiness. Among the many services offered are co-op and internship searches, career fairs, and, most popularly, resume reviews. Visit Handshake to schedule an appointment with a career counselor. The information gained throughout each session will gradually improve your professionalism and prepare you for your career plan after graduation.

They even offer FREE professional headshots. That’s right. You don’t have to keep using your senior picture on your LinkedIn profile. Head on over to the Iris Booth in Student Center West 270 and take high-quality professional headshots. University Career Services has got you covered on your journey to career-readiness!

The Writing Studio

If you want a second opinion on your creative writing piece or need help editing an essay for class, the Writing Studio is more than happy to help. Any day from Monday through Friday, you can schedule an appointment on their website to connect with a staff member.

From there, they’ll be able to guide you through those last edits you need to make or even help you in the beginning stages of your writing and help you structure your piece, making sure it is only the best of the best.

With the help of these resources at Georgia State, you’ll never have to worry about going through college alone. Keep your eye out for the third part of this series as I give the 411 on the many eateries around campus that offer student discounts!
