As we grow older and life begins to take full effect there is nothing like longing over a period of happiness in the past, better known as nostalgia. Growing into a young adult we begin to experience so much more life has to offer. For the number of highs in the world as we grow into young adults, there are also many lows that come with life that we all learn to overcome. Overcoming a situation that causes us anger, sorrow, or even into a deep depression can cause us to reminisce over the times that cause us complete happiness even small moments we don’t understand why they brought us happiness.

Nostalgic moments can come from the smallest things such as smells, music, or even your favorite childhood film. I think we’re all familiar with the scholastic book store smell on a fall day in grade school. Days that remind you of sentimental moments you’ve experienced in your past are the most rewarding feelings. There is a sense of innocence and well-being when we feel these nostalgic moments. It is no question that music holds an abundance of memories. Music can reveal an exact moment of time of your life whether it was a sh*tty time or what felt like the best day of your life.

My most nostalgic moment comes from listening to “Take Me As I Am” by Mary J Blige. I visualize my mom singing along on a random sunny day as we drove around Philadelphia on our way back to our apartment at the time. This moment does not have a significant meaning but I remember feeling indescribable happiness watching my mom sing. I question often what about that day made me feel the way that I did. My mom is actually quite good at singing which makes me question if that was my first time noticing my mother’s talent. Now as a young adult, I find myself feeling warm and wanting to cry tears of joy when I hear this song.

The world is currently living through nostalgia while the global pandemic still exists in 2021. With the constant footage that everyone takes of their life, it’s so easy to look back on our lives before COVID-19 was brought to our attention. I myself, long to go to a concert. Remembering the feeling of mingling with strangers as we sing our favorite artist together. This is so easily shown through social platforms such as twitter’s current trend “You had to be there.” Various people are using pictures to share times in their childhood that were moments in time. Seeing pictures of Nintendo dogs or popular YouTubers from the early 2010s unlocks memories of how much fun it was being a child.
