5 Fall Activities That You Can Do While Social Distancing

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at George Mason University chapter.

The temperatures are starting to drop, and the sweet notes of pumpkin spice and crunchy leaves are in the air. Although it will be more challenging to participate in fall festivities the way that we are used to, there are still ways in which we can celebrate Fall while maintaining safety guidelines and social distancing

1. Apple picking

If there is any activity that is a fall staple, it would have to be apple picking. Grab your mask and some friends and have a photoshoot. Not only do you get some great fall pics for your Instagram feed, but you also get to bring home some apples. Many places are still open; however, it will look a little different from what you are used to since social distancing and safety guidelines must be enforced. Do your research beforehand to ensure that the orchid you are going to is following the proper safety and social distancing guidelines.

2. Bake some fall treats

If you decide to go apple picking, you can use them to bake an apple pie or any other apple dessert. If apples and apple-based desserts are not your cup of tea, there are still plenty of other treats you can make. Pinterest has a wide variety of Fall and Halloween inspired goodies that you can make, so go on there to find some inspiration and get baking.

3. Go on a scenic drive

My favorite part of the Fall is when the leaves start to change colors. Take some time to go outside and enjoy the crisp fall air and the gorgeous array of colors that the leaves turn. One of my favorite ways to do this is by going on drives. One of the best places to go to in Virginia during the Fall is Skyline Drive, pack some snacks, queue up your fall playlist, and take a long scenic drive through the winding roads filled with blue skies and gorgeous foliage.

4. Have a scary movie night with your friends

There are so many ways that we can maintain a connection with each other online, and platforms such as Zoom and Netflix Party have made social distancing while still staying connected with your friends and loved ones during COVID times so much easier.

5. Pumpkin Carving

There is no better way to relieve some stress and get in the fall mood then carving pumpkins! You can perform this activity while social distancing, or even virtually do it with your friends over Zoom and video chat so that you can all keep each other company while you carve your pumpkins. The best part about this activity is that when you are done, you can place your pumpkin on your porch or elsewhere in your house and admire it. Another thing that I like to do when I carve pumpkins is take the seeds out and roast them in the oven, rather than throwing them out.

Have a safe and happy fall, collegiettes!
