You’re Going to Be Okay: A Friendly Reminder

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FSU chapter.

It’s that time in the semester when we start to freak out because tests pile up or maybe because we find ourselves too overwhelmed with life in general. Seniors are preparing for graduation and trying to decide whether they want to continue towards graduate school or if they should find a full-time job instead. Underclassman are just as stressed as they try to adjust to the college lifestyle or as they try to decide if their major is the right one for them.

This age is a stressful age for everyone in college. We’re under pressure to get a degree so we can better our lives and make the big bucks. All this pressure can become overwhelming yet many of us forget that these rough times will soon pass. We also tend to forget that everyone we pass by in life is struggling through something, no matter how small and insignificant it may seem or how calm they might appear on the outside. We live in a society where we walk around in a constant state of stress, and it’s considered normal because if you’re not stressed you aren’t doing anything challenging. Stress and anxiety often lead to depression. Many people feel like they can’t handle the pressure of stress and they often feel alone and frustrated.

Don’t panic! Here are a few tips to remember when life gets too rough:

Take a break from everything

If you feel too overwhelmed, step outside for a little while. Take yourself away from what’s stressing you out and do something fun so you can come back refreshed. Go to the gym with friends, eat a slice of pizza, dance or watch silly animal videos like this one or this one.

You’re not perfect. No one is!

We may all want to be perfect, but all of us make mistakes. The one thing we should all remember is that one mistake shouldn’t ruin our positivity and confidence in ourselves. One bad grade doesn’t define you, nor does a mistake you make at work. Pick yourself up and remind yourself that you’re still pretty freaking awesome.

Reward yourself and don’t be so hard on yourself.

Being more positive and rewarding yourself even for the smallest things will always work as a great pick me up. So what if you didn’t get that part-time job you wanted? You got a fat A on your midterm that you can celebrate for instead. You should go celebrate and treat yourself to something amazing like a cold beer, a shopping trip or that delicious cookie you’ve been eyeing all week.

So many of us are going through the same troubles. Hurting yourself in ANY FORM is not the answer to your problems. What is the answer is talking things out to realize that everything is ok, because most of the time, we exaggerate a lot of our own problems. Talk to your fellow FSU Noles about your struggles, your family, your boyfriend/girlfriend or visit the counseling center on campus.

Many successful people struggled at our age to get to where they are now.

At 23 years old, JK Rowling was broke, Tina Fey was working at the YMCA, Oprah had just been fired as a TV reporter, and Walt Disney had declared bankruptcy. A lot of successful people weren’t born with such success and didn’t get there in a day. Keep your eye on your goals!

So what does this all mean? You’re going to be okay.

Things may seem pretty impossible now, but one day you’ll look back and realize how strong these obstacles made you. Stay positive and hopeful, Collegiettes!
