The last thing you need to hear is yet another article about the pandemic. So, I’m not going to do that. Instead, to uplift your spirits, I’m here to encourage you to do something for yourself first. Although this might seem extremely selfish at first, it is absolutely crucial that you take care of yourself so you can extend the same sentiments to the others around you. That being said, you’re probably wondering why we don’t reward ourselves more often and what rewards even look like nowadays. So, let’s get into it.

When did the rewards stop?

As a kid, I remember adults were an important part of the distribution of rewards. We were taught from a very young age to set goals, and in return for achieving them, we would get something for our efforts. Although this seemed like a great idea for the development of adolescent goal setting and achievement, now, as adults, there are no authority figures rewarding us for getting through the responsibilities of everyday life as an adult. You are thrust into society and left to fend for yourself. This is why you need to be your own reward figure.

There is no denying that mental health is tied to how you treat yourself, so don’t cut yourself short. It’s not selfish to want or even need a little boost every once in a while. For me, I require constant pats on the back, not only from others around me but from myself to realize that the work I do and the time spent studying and writing is worth it. Don’t get me wrong, I love putting in the time and effort to learn new things but burnout is real. And it’s not something to fear.

How do I reward myself?

Now that we understand the importance of rewards even after adolescence, what do these rewards look like? Well, it depends on what you consider a reward. Some people look at rewards as something they can hold in their hands, tangible things. But others consider rewards as more of an experience. Whatever the preference, as long as it is something you can do or buy for yourself that makes you feel appreciated, it counts!

Some examples of tangible rewards that I often give myself are foods, clothes and crafting supplies. Nothing makes me happier than buying myself a nice coffee from Starbucks, purchasing a cute shirt from Urban Outfitters or investing in new acrylic paints and brushes to feed my hipster alter ego.

Now, for the non-tangible rewards, I like to either plan a trip with friends or go by myself. Traveling somewhere, even if it’s in my local area or somewhere more distant, gives me something to look forward to when I’m booked and busy with a bunch of school and work responsibilities. This is a great way to unwind and even celebrate your achievements with the people around you, without leaving your own wellbeing behind.

Conclusion:

This year has been tough enough, and now is the perfect time to treat yourself for getting through it in one piece, barely. Christmas is almost here, and you will soon be flocking to the stores for things you can gift your loved ones over the holidays. All I ask you to do is to remember when you look for Grandma’s favorite sweater or Aunt Jenny’s favorite necklace, you look and buy something for yourself.
