Spend the Ideal Rainy Day at Home Using These 10 Steps

I believe the rain comes at the perfect time, allowing everyone to hit the pause button when they need it most. It should never be wasted on productivity (unless that’s your way of relaxing). Instead, you can think of it as a meditative experience! No class, to-do list, or errands to run; nothing to put you in an instant rush.

It doesn’t matter what you do — a rainy day spent in the comfort of your own home is a success. However, if I had to imagine my perfect rainy day, this is how it’d go.

sleep in

First things first: don’t even think about setting an alarm. On rainy days, your bed is your best friend, and the rain makes it the perfect excuse to sleep in a little longer. It’s so easy to feel guilty for bed rotting, but today, there’s no reason to feel bad about having some time to unwind and rest.

Crack the Window (But Just a Little)

When you finally roll out of bed, crack open the window just a bit. Let the vibes come to you, feeling a bit of that rainy day breeze, creating the perfect ambiance. It’s the perfect soundtrack for a slow morning!

Light Lots of Candles

Nothing says cozy vibes quite like candles. Light a few of your favorite scents around your room, and you’ll immediately feel like you’re on a dreamy escape. Rich lavender or sweet vanilla is always my pick when it comes to candles on a dark, rainy day.

Warm Tea, Not Coffee

When the rain is pouring, coffee may feel a little intense. Instead, I opt for a cup of soothing hot tea. Whether you’re sipping on chamomile or something more energizing like green tea or chai, there’s something about tea that pairs perfectly with rainy weather.

Atmospheric Music

Create the perfect backdrop with some atmospheric tunes to go with the trickling of the rain. Dreamscape playlists are perfect when you want music playing but nothing that’s too intense or distracting. I usually go for soft indie like Lana Del Rey or calm folk like Neil Young. Music helps me sink into the relaxation mindset more than anything, so it’s essential!

Indulge in your favorite comfort food

Rainy days = comfort food. It’s just a law of nature. A bowl of chicken noodle soup, ramen, pho, or pasta — something that fills you with warmth — is a necessity. Don’t forget about the sweet treats! Maybe a little homemade cookie dough, ice cream, or even air fryer s’mores if you’re feeling brave. It’s up to you, but snacks are a must.

Movie Marathon: Get Cozy with Your Favorites

Now, let’s talk movies. There are so many options! Maybe you’re in the mood for a Harry Potter marathon (because, let’s be real, it’s always a good time), or maybe you’re feeling the rom-com vibes, like When Harry Met Sally or How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days. If you want to step away from the modern world, a Jane Austen movie adaptation could definitely be the way to go.

And who says you can’t throw in a little celebrity crush movie for fun? Whatever you pick, make sure to line up a few back-to-back films for the full experience, so you can turn off your mind and simply enjoy.

Have a spa day

There’s nothing better than a long, hot shower on a cold, wet day. Exfoliate, wear a face mask and take your time. After all, rainy days are the perfect excuse to indulge in a little self-care. Maybe even throw in a bath if you’re feeling extra luxurious. I know I always love having time for a self-care reset where I can fully moisturize, give myself a manicure, and make sure I’m rejuvenated in all the ways I need.

get creative

When you’ve had your fill of food and movies, grab a book and lose yourself in a different world. There isn’t a better day to start a book when I have the rain coming down outside and a candle lit nearby. I love taking a moment to journal and reflect, letting it all out.

Rainy days are also the perfect time to plan something exciting: a future trip, a personal project, or just a simple weekend getaway. The options are endless!

meditate and reflect

Finally, if you’re feeling a little extra zen, try meditating for a bit. Close your eyes, focus on your breath, and let your mind unwind. The sound of the rain can really help you get in the prime state of mind. It’s like the universe’s own version of a mental reset, perfect for clearing your head and letting go of stress.

Rainy days don’t have to be boring or depressing. In fact, with a little planning and a whole lot of coziness, they can be incredibly refreshing. So, next time the rain is pouring and thunder is rumbling, take a page from this guide and make it your perfect day to recharge and treat yourself!
