Everyone in a long-distance relationship can understand dreading the post-goodbye feelings. It can be hard not to curl up in bed and reminisce on your time together while crying over sad romance films.

With it being so soon after Valentine’s Day, some of us may be feeling this exact way. Long-distance relationships can be hard. They require a lot of dedication, time, and communication, all of which seem easier when you’re physically together. It’s easy to forget that long-distance relationships don’t have to become a routine of the same thing over and over.

There are ways to keep the spark alive even with the distance, and that includes planning fun, unique quality time. If you’re struggling to find fun ways to feel connected to your significant other, here are some ideas to get you started!

Dinner Date

A dinner date takes on new meaning when you’re in a long-distance relationship. Making food over the phone is a great way to feel like you’re there with your person. You can send recipes beforehand, then pick which one you both like the best, or you can make different dishes since you’re far apart. If you’re in different countries, you can make cultural dishes and exchange your processes.

If you’re not much of a cook or working without a kitchen, surprise each other by ordering your partner’s meal. There are food delivery services out there for this purpose.

A crucial, but often forgotten part of the long-distance dinner date is still putting time and effort into the actual date. Dress up for each other, set the table, light a candle, and put on some music. It may feel silly at first, but this part is so important to get that feeling of being in a “normal” relationship. You deserve your real date moment too!

Playing Video Games Together

We’re lucky to live in an age when there are many ways to be with your partner without being physically there. One of the most prominent examples of this is playing a game. There’s a huge library of games couples can play together, each one at different price points or skill levels. My personal favorites are Roblox, Minecraft, and It Takes Two.

Roblox is free to play, super easy to connect with friends, and has many options for different games. I’ve had many sleepless and laughter-filled nights playing Roblox with my partner.

Another option, and a rather popular one, is Minecraft. You can play in creative mode and have a wholesome date creating your and your partner’s dream house, or, if you want a challenge, you can play in survival mode and try to beat the game together.

It Takes Two is a popular multiplayer game available on most consoles, where you work as a team to solve puzzles. This game is a great way to problem-solve with your partner, as well as build your communication skills whilst playing a fun game.

Watching A Movie Together

This date idea is easygoing but still highlights the important cozy vibes needed in all relationships. Even something as simple as counting down and pressing play together builds intimacy and a feeling of togetherness. Watching a movie is also an amazing way to share opinions, start a conversation, or enjoy each other’s presence alongside an entertaining film.

You can even get creative with your movie date by using a random movie generator or setting up for the special moment with popcorn and pajamas.

Couple Questions Game

A relaxing way to get deep or laugh with your partner is a couples’ question game. Look up questions online, or use a pre-made box of them, and start asking away.

Fun ways to do this include asking a question and trying to match your answers. These answers can be written on a separate piece of paper or device and then revealed to the camera at the same time. In a game like this, you’ll both feel like winners after getting to know one another even better.

Have you ever seen something online and thought, “I could totally make that!” Well, here’s a great way to turn your craft ideas into a fun date. Even if you or your partner aren’t artistic, there are plenty of options that can be catered to your skill level.

Some ideas could be drawing each other over drinks and then revealing your portraits (this craft is honestly even funnier if you can’t draw), building a LEGO set, or creating a care package to send to one another.

You could even add ambience to this date by listening to a playlist highlighting your favorite songs together. Either make the playlist beforehand in collaboration or surprise one another with a custom playlist.

Long-distance relationships can be difficult, but what makes it all worth it is that special time you get to spend with your partner, on and off screen. Don’t get caught up in the post-Valentine’s blues, and instead remind yourselves that the fun doesn’t stop when you say goodbye.
