The relationships you have with your family, friends, significant other or any individual have an impact on you. Boundaries are important because they gives you your own space and let the other person know how to treat you.

Be Honest

No matter how hard it might be for you to admit the truth, it’s way better to be honest with other people and yourself than to spin a lie. Relationships are like glass. If you drop a glass, it breaks. You can try to glue the pieces back together, but it won’t be the same. When you lie, it gives the other person a good reason to not trust you. It can ruin the relationship you have with that person.

Saying No

If you’re like me, then you know that no matter how busy you are if someone asks you to do something you will think to yourself, “I could do it,” even though you have a million gazillion other tasks to do. Just like with honesty, you have to be real with yourself. Ask yourself if you have a reasonable amount of time to complete the new task that is being brought up to you on top of the tasks you already have. Last semester, I found myself exhausted and stressed. I was also drinking a lot of coffee when my body didn’t have rest. This fueled my exhaustion and stress more. Looking back, I now know why. I wasn’t saying no to people and myself.

Prioritizing Your Time

This can be interrupted in many ways. One way is during the workday. Just because you have a bit of free time between your busy schedule doesn’t mean you should always fill it with hanging out with people. When you have that one-hour break of nothing to do, take that time for self-care. You can grab lunch, find a comfortable space to take a nap, or plan out your week on your agenda.

Communication is Key

I cannot stress it enough how important communication is. If you’re having problems with someone for whatever reason, then find a space and time to communicate with them one-on-one about how you feel. When you don’t communicate effectively, you’re doing yourself a disservice. Be clear and concise about how you feel. Communication isn’t always easy because it can also be tied with being vulnerable. When you communicate about your emotions, you’re also letting your guard down. It’s okay to let the person know how you are feeling. Just like the women on The Bachelor have communicated how they feel with Peter, you can too. When they communicate their concerns to Peter, it makes their bond with him closer, giving him a sense of security.

Putting Yourself First

Your time is valuable, just as Beyoncé’s time. Your mental health is important, just as important as anyone else’s. When you’re making decisions for yourself and your future, it’s important to put yourself first because no one else is living your life. The choices you make are the ones you will be responsible of upholding. At the end of the day, it’s your life. You have the power of creating the life you want to live.
