In less than two months, season three of the Percy Jackson show on Disney+ will premiere, and with the release of trailers and promotional photos, the Percy Jackson fandom has seen a resurgence. Since Percy Jackson is coming back, I thought it would be fun to match each FSU dorm hall with a Camp Half-Blood cabin to entertain ourselves as we await the new season!
Azalea and Magnolia: Demeter and Nemesis
I decided that Azalea would get Demeter because it has the 1851 dining venue attached, which ties in Demeter’s agricultural and harvest aspects. Magnolia gets Nemesis, the goddess of balance. The original Magnolia Hall was razed in 1979, and the construction of the new hall offset its absence.
Broward: Aphrodite
Broward Hall was originally built for the Florida State College for Women in 1917. Special hallways were designed to allow women to stay indoors while walking to the dining hall. Being able to stay indoors while going about your daily business makes me think of beauty, because not having to face the weather helps keep your look cute and intact, and that screams Aphrodite to me.
Bryan: Ares
Bryan Hall, you guys get the Ares Cabin. The building itself resembles a fortress, and Ares is the god of war, so I thought it was only appropriate.
cawthon: Dionysus
Most people know Dionysus as the god of wine, but he is also the god of theater. Cawthon Hall is the closest residence hall to the College of Fine Arts, so you guys get Dionysus.
DeGraff: Hephaestus
DeGraff Hall is the only residence hall on the other side of West Tennessee Street, so there is a tunnel under the street that connects to campus. This, to me, screams the architect of Olympus, Hephaestus.
Dorman: Zeus
Dorman Hall was named for Olivia Dorman, a classics professor at FSU when it was the Florida State College for Women. Classics is the study of Greek and Roman culture. When people think of Greek Mythology, Zeus is often the first thing that comes to mind, so I’ve assigned Dorman Hall to Zeus.
Deviney: Artemis
Deviney Hall was named after Dr. Ezda May Deviney, who was the head of the Department of Zoology. Artemis is a goddess of the wilderness, so those of you in Deviney might need to get ready to join Artemis on the hunt, as she has no children, only hunters, and they’re typically not at camp.
Gilchrist: Athena
Athena is the goddess of war strategy and a virgin goddess, so she was particularly important to women in Ancient Greece. I decided to give Gilchrist the Athena cabin because it was named after Brigadier General Albert Waller Gilchrist, who was a soldier in the Spanish-American War. The reason I made Gilchrist Athena and Bryan Ares is that Gilchrist began as a women’s hall.
Jennie Murphree: Hebe
Jennie Murphree Hall was a women’s hall, named after the wife of Dr. Albert A. Murphree. Now, I’ve assigned this residence hall mostly on its vibe; however, Hebe is a goddess, not a god, which suits Jennie Murphree’s origins as a women’s hall, and she famously marries Hercules, which ties in with it being named after the wife of a famous figure.
Landis: Poseidon
The obvious option for the honors dorm would be Athena, but I wanted to take a more unique aspect of Landis Hall. Landis Hall is right at the front of Landis Green, home to the Legacy Fountain, a registered pool. Due to the names and the dorm’s proximity to the pool, I decided that Landis Hall should get the Poseidon Cabin.
McCollum: Hades
McCollum, I’m assigning based on its vibe. McCollum was originally known as “Hall X” before getting an official name. Hades gives me a cool vibe, and so does the original name of McCollum.
Ragans: Hypnos
Hypnos is known as the god of sleep, and he gives me cozy vibes. Not only do Ragans residents get their own bedrooms, which is the coziest thing of all, at least to me, but they are right across the street from the Askew Student Life Center (ASLC) movie theater. Going to the movies is such a chill and relaxing thing to do, especially in the stress of college.
Reynolds: Hecate
Hecate is the goddess of the crossroads. Since Reynolds is in such a central part of campus, they get Hecate. The dining hall, the William Johnston Building, and many other things are near Reynolds. Since the residence hall is centrally located, they get the goddess of the crossroads.
Rogers: Hera
Rogers Hall is getting the Hera Cabin. Hera is commonly known as Zeus’s wife and the goddess of marriage. Originally, Rogers Hall was designed to house married students, so they got Hera.
Salley: Hermes
Salley is the furthest hall from the main campus, so they get Hermes. Hermes is the god of travelers, so to support any Salley residents who have to walk far to their classes, they’re being placed in Cabin 11.
Traditions: Nike
Traditions Hall is right by Doak S. Campbell Stadium, so I’ve decided to assign them Nike, the goddess of victory. Obviously, as Florida State students, we all want our football team to succeed, so given Traditions’ proximity to the football stadium, I’ve given them the goddess of victory.
Wildwood: Apollo
I’ve decided to give Wildwood the Apollo Cabin, which is my cabin! Apollo is a god of many things, including music and healing. Wildwood is just steps away from the Wellness Center, and in the late afternoon, you can hear the band practicing. So, for Wildwood residents, you get the Apollo Cabin.
So, that is all of the dorm halls assigned to a Camp Half-Blood Cabin. Make sure to watch the newest season of the Percy Jackson show when it comes out on Nov. 20, and look for your cabin while watching!
