5 Reasons Why Dieting is Bad for Losing Weight

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Framingham chapter.

We all diet to lose weight, yes?  There are all sorts of diets out there: Keto, dairy, you name it.  But dieting is actually the opposite of what you should be doing when you try to lose weight.  Can you guess why?

Now, I don’t claim to be a expert in weight loss.  I’m no trainer, but I have struggled with my weight for eons.  This is because I also have epilepsy, and that makes weight extra hard for me.  Restricting food means restricting sugar.  Restricting sugar means getting less fuel to your brain, since your brain feeds on sugar to work.  And if you have epilepsy, it’s a nightmare.  So, I have decided to share some of the reasons on why dieting is bad for losing weight.

It causes stress

Your body is BUILT to store fat.  What dieting (restricting certain foods) does to your body is cause fear.  Fear of not having enough to eat.  And what does the body do when that happens?  Try to grab onto whatever it can to survive.  Survival of the fittest, sound familiar?

When in fear, the body signals the brain to release the stress hormone, cortisol. While it is healthy to have a balance of cortisol in your body, dieting has the potential to tip that balance.  What that does is that at this point, you eat more carbs instead of less.  Dieting tricks your body into thinking it is in starvation mode.

It slows down your metabolism

Cortisol is also known to slow down your metabolism.  Think about it this way:  when you diet, it tricks the body into starvation mode.  It then tries to save as much energy as possible. Therefore, the body will try to do everything possible to save as much energy as possible.  According to dictionary.com, “metabolism is the sum of the physical and chemical processes in an organism by which its material substance is produced, maintained, and destroyed, and which ENERGY is made available” So put two and two together, and you get a word that spells out DISASTER!

It’s not long term, it’s short term

Okay, you might have heard of this.  But it’s true.  Dieting is hard.  Can you imagine not eating chocolate at all for the rest of your life?  I certaintly can’t.  Imagine how horrifying that is!  Chocolate is one of the best treats we have, and we live without it?  What has this world come to?!

Your body is being nutrient deficient

Let me ask you this, in regards to the milk you feed babies, is store bought milk (formula) better or mothers’ milk better?  Well, of course mothers’!  Studies have shown that babies that drink mothers’ milk are actually so much better off than those that drink manmade ones.  Look into this if you don’t believe me.

Milk causes pimples.  So why can’t I use Almond milk?  Almond milk is a SUBSTITUTE for actual milk.  It is made to REPLACE milk.  But then again, can we imitate nature?  The answer is no.  No matter how much we try, nature’s answer is always better.

It’s hard to stay motivated

I don’t know about you, but I find it extremely hard to avoid certain types of foods.  We all love carbs, is there any who doesn’t?  So, cut carbs out of your diet for one month completely?  I know I can’t.
