Self-care is more than just Netflix days and pajamas. At the start of this semester, we have to embrace the real self-care. This self-care is easier said than done. It’s putting in the work for yourself. Self-care is going out of your way in the present, in order to treat yourself in the future.  It’s doing a little extra in order to make your week flow nicer and to ultimately relieve stress. Here are a few self-care practices I do on a daily basis.

Find a routine

Routine seems like a daunting concept, especially at a time of such change. In college, our thoughts, friends, tastes, etc. evolve constantly. For some people, this rapid change causes anxiety. I find that routine helps this. My little routines are more like rituals: I get up at the around the same time every morning, no matter when my classes begin. I eat my meals at the same times and I go to the gym at night. Planning out your day is a great way to find a routine. I like to do this using a planner or my Google Calendar. This way, I feel in control and ahead of the game.

Meditate

Meditation is so important. It eases your mind and your body after hectic and busy days. Most college students believe that they do not have time for meditation, but it is not as time-consuming as one might think. You can meditate right from your dorm with apps such as Headspace and Calm. These apps guide users through breathing and meditation exercises. They target areas such as anxiety, stress, and lack of sleep. Meditation is a college self-care essential

Be gentle with yourself

College is all about competition: grades, internships, money. It is easy to feel behind when your peers seem to be achieving so much. If you are like me, this pressure feels insurmountable. Tell yourself that you are proud. Relish in your achievements and stop comparing them to the achievements of others. Everyone grows at different rates, and comparison can only stunt your growth. Always remember that you are a special person, who has so many talents and gifts. They might be different than that of others, but they formulate your personality.

Ultimately, these practices lead toward self-love. This is the point of self-care, loving yourself enough to nurture your body and spirit.
