Spring is traditionally the time for decluttering your home, but it’s also the perfect opportunity to clear out mental clutter. Just like you deep clean your living space, you can give your mind a fresh start by evaluating your thoughts, habits, and emotional baggage. It can be very hard to get out of the sad funk that winter brings, but hopefully these tips can help you clear your mind and feel refreshed.Â
In my opinion, reflection is the first step to being able to clear your head of all the negative thoughts. You have to do some deep thinking and realize what is weighing you down and giving you that stress. Is it school? Is it home-life? Are there things that you can control? Are you having a negative outlook on things?
There are a lot of things in life we can’t control that provide stress, but we can control things too. I think once you realize what is causing a lot of this stress, it is important to journal and write out what is on your mind, what is bothering you to get it somewhere other than your head.Â
Once you get rid of those thoughts on paper, you can start to think of things that provide you joy. For example, if school is stressing you out, set aside a time while studying to go for a walk or go get a sweet treat to make yourself feel better!
For me, I often complain and have a negative mindset, but I am trying to work on being positive and having a better outlook on life. It really makes a difference on how you feel and work throughout the day, when you aren’t dreading things as often.
Bad habits are also really hard to break, but just as you are performing the habit, you can retrain your brain to get out of that habit. Having self-discipline is crucial, and making sure you are holding yourself accountable. It is hard to be productive and not lay in bed when you are supposed to be doing anything else. Once you start getting in a good routine you will be more drawn to that than just to be unproductive. I recently broke the habit of biting my nails. I am still in the process but I feel so much better now that I am not doing that to myself anymore.Â
Overall, it is very hard to break the cycle of being down and not feeling yourself. Although it is okay to not be doing the best, there are things we can control that can help us feel better about going on throughout these months after a winter slump!
