How to Combat End-of-Semester Stress

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Emory chapter.

We’ve made it to November. It was a lot of work, but we’re not at the finish line yet. November is always a daunting month for me because it feels like academics should be settling down, when really they’re just getting kicked into high gear. The weather is chilly and all you can think about is how you are going to spend the month wrapped up in a sweater and cuddling with Netflix while the rain patters outside. Wrong. If only.

So, how do you make the most out of November and still make the grades?

Pick and choose your down time.

Marathoning Friends is bliss. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. However, maybe that’s best saved for your post-Thanksgiving dinner coma. Crank out those papers now and enjoy the sloth when you get to be with family and friends.

Multi-task the fun stuff

On that note, no person can continue to do their best work without relaxation or socialization. The key is to make the most of the things that you need to do to stay sane. Maybe watch Netflix on your phone while on the elliptical—this surprises everyone, but you need to keep up on your shows and fitness. Make sure eating is social too; the happiness of seeing friends also means you’re taking the time to supply your body with the nutrition you need to keep going!

Prioritize

You have probably already procrastinated something big. It’s okay, I forgive you. (Maybe because I’ve done it, too.) Now it’s time to figure out what’s at the top of your list and stick to it. Organizing your pens by color can wait until that big assignment is no longer hanging over your head. Once out of crisis mode, you can begin to take a more thoughtful and leisurely approach to whatever is left on the list.

Planners are our friends

Maybe I’m too Type A, but sometimes I spend more time with my planner than my pillow. Set out realistic goals, map out your time, and make lists of what needs to get done. It’s better to see an action plan on the calendar than the days flying away from you. Take control!

Hopefully, this upcoming month is good to you. The leaves are on the sidewalk and the smell of cinnamon and caramel is everywhere; just make sure that you are relaxed enough to enjoy them!
