If there’s one thing that’s always gotten me through my studying, it’s my sweet tooth. However, it’s extremely hard to appease the craving when you have no idea what to make or if you even have the resources to make it living in a college dorm. Faced with this challenge, I decided to collect recipes that were dorm room friendly and make them myself. Here are some of my all time favorites — enjoy!

1. S’mores

Bring the camping inside with this one! One of the easiest desserts, s’mores requires three ingredients and a microwave. If you are in a rush or just want a quick snack, I would recommend giving these a try. I had no problem making them, but the only struggle was having to get the ingredients. Stick graham crackers, a piece of chocolate, and a marshmallow in the microwave for 15 seconds and you have an automatic treat!

2. Rice Krispie Treats

Not only are these treats delicious, but they are also astoundingly easy to prepare. By altering the proportion of ingredients you put in, you can make a batch large enough for friends or a single serving for yourself. When making these, I found the hardest part to be ensuring the marshmallows didn’t overflow in the microwave due to their size expansion. Making them was a little sticky, but overall, totally worth it.

3. One Minute Chocolate Peanut Butter Mug Cake

I was a little nervous to try this because it seemed to include more detailed directions than the previous ones I had tried. However, the final product did result in a well-deserved taste. In terms of ingredients, this recipe required a larger quantity of supplies. Most of the troubles came from acquiring all the ingredients. However, once I had gathered and put everything into a mug, it was only about one minute until heaven. Depending on the quality of your microwave, you may need a little more cooking time. If you have an overwhelming craving for a quick lava cake, this is your way to go. Even though this is more complex, it is a dorm room manageable project.

4. Peanut Butter Bars

At first, I was skeptical about how much effort was necessary for baking these. Looking at the pictures online, I thought that this recipe would require more than what was available in a dorm. To my surprise, this recipe wasn’t only manageable, it was also my favorite. The difficulties I encountered while making it were figuring out a way to crush up the graham crackers, but a plastic bag and a spoon fixed that. In addition, this recipe called for only a few ingredients, making this project easier to manage. In all, they took a bit longer to make than the other recipes, but the quality of the food was worth it. The yield is large enough where one batch will last you a few days of peanut butter-chocolatey bliss.

Not only did I enjoy the experience of making these desserts, but I also got to learn new baking methods to apply in my own dorm. I was skeptical as to how good some of these would be, such as the mug cake, but I was pleasantly surprised by their satisfying taste. It’s never too late to become a baker, and your dorm room is the perfect place to start!
