How I Prevent Burnout During Midterms

Midterms during the spring semester can be tough. Especially with spring break right around the corner, it’s hard to stay motivated the few weeks leading up to the break. Here are a few of the things that I do to continue to push through.

The first thing I like to do when I begin to feel myself burning out is completely stop. If I wake up and have that feeling, I like to take it easy and have a reset kind of day. Leading up to the week of finals I find myself barely in my room, so having a reset day to rot in my bed helps me feel less anxious about the upcoming tests.

Another thing I like to do during a reset day where I don’t feel the need to lay in bed all day is to do a deep cleanse of my room, and an everything-shower that night. Sometimes I like to follow up with a facemask, just depending on how I feel. This helps me feel fully reset in my space and helps to relax when I come back to the room after a long day of studying.

Going off the last tip, try to do all your work outside your bedroom. As tempting as it is to do all your reading in your bed, it’s best you do your work somewhere else so your brain can differentiate the spaces. This way it knows when it’s time to study and when it’s time to relax. I’ve also fallen victim to falling asleep while studying in bed, so going to the library or exploring your campus is a great way to combat that.

To avoid burnout I’ve found that it’s best to do things that calm you, or help you think about something other than school work. Being able to relax is something that college students don’t often have the time for, especially during exam weeks, so it’s important to make that time for yourself and prioritize your mental health before you completely exhaust yourself.
